Title: The Rampling Families in Lancashire - Please Help!!!
Post by: Jan Ann on Saturday 16 July 05 18:00 BST (UK)
Hello Everyone

My grandmother was Edith Wilde (nee Rampling) born abt 1906/7 Ashton-in-Makerfield - died about 1975 Golborne,  I was about 6 or 7 when she died so I don't remember much about her. She was married to Richard Wilde, son of Thomas Wilde and Elizabeth Melling.

My dad doesnt remember many of the Ramplings as my Grandma and her family fell out because she switched religion from C of E to Catholic!

What he does remember is that Edith's dad was called James and his wife was Jane - they came from Ashton in Makerfield - they had about 13 children! but all he can remember are Annie, James and Eliza.

If anyone can help, please contact me

Best wishes
Jan

It looks like these may be your family on the 1901 census
RG13/3572 Wigan Ashton in Makerfield, Folio 93 Page 23
10 Golborne Road, Ashton in Makerfield
James Rampling, Head M 27 Brickpelter
Jane Wife M 25
Elizabeth daur 6
James Son 4
Annie daur 2
Gladys daur 4 months
All born Ashton in Makerfield

If you don't know Edith's date of birth, then if you get Gladys's birth certificate it will tell you Jane's maiden name
Gladys Rampling December qtr 1900 Wigan 8c 169
You can order it online at www.gro.gov.uk

Hope this helps

Here is James in 1891

64 Gerard Street, Ashton
James Rampling Head M 68 Grocer (neither employer nor employed) Somersetshire
Sarah Wife M 39 Lancs Haydock
James Son S 16 Bricksetter Lancs Ashton in Makerfield
Joseph " 14 Fishmonger " "
Thomas " 9 months " "

I would think that maybe Sarah was a second wife.

A James Rampling married September qtr 1894 Wigan 8c 8.  One of the brides was a Jane Pimblett.

You should be able to find the family in the 1881 census at www.familysearch.org

Yes, on the LancashireBMD site there is a marriage of James Rampling and Jane Pimblett in 1894 in St Thomas, Ashton in Makerfield, the register is held at Wigan.

Also there is a marriage of James Rampling and Sarah Ann Houlton in 1872 in the Register Office Wigan.

There are a few Jane Pimbletts in the near area, but this one was born and living in Ashton in Makerfield.  The only way you'll find out for certain is by Jane and James marriage certificate, which will list the father's names.

Have you tried yourself to find the 1881 census at www.familysearch.org ?  I think you need to take it step by step before we check the 1871 and 1861 for you, if we have the wrong families then you will be going completely up the wrong alley.

I know it seems likely these are right, but as I told you before the only way to be positive that you have the right family is by confirmation with either a birth certificate which will give both parents names (incuding mother's maiden name) or the marriage certificate giving their names, ages, addresses, occupations, fathers names and occupations and hopefully a couple of witnesses who might be relatives.

Hi Mary

Thanks for the advice- I am sure that these are the correct details as I have contacted a gentleman who is studying the Pimblett family and as a stroke of luck he has a copy of the marriage cert of James Rampling and Jane Pimblett! he has confirmed the details of their parents.

Thanks once again - I will look them up in the 1881 census!

Can't be sure about these, you will notice that James only married Sarah in 1872.

In 1871 there is RG10/3898 Wigan Ashton in Makerfield Folio 131 Page 1
Town South Side, Ashton in Makerfield
James Rampling Head M 50 Draper and Labourer Middlesex Lothbury
Ann Wife M 53 Draper Middlesex London

There is a death of Ann Rampling December qtr 1872 Wigan age 55 8c 66 and
Marriage of James Rampling December qtr 1872 Wigan 8c 131

Very strangely if the above is your James, in 1861 RG9/2786 Wigan Ashton in Makerfield Folio 139 Page 44
Town, Ashton in Makerfield
James Rampling Head M 40 Highway Labourer Northumberland Lawtham
Ann Wife M 42 Dressmaker London
Joseph Son 14 Bricklayer's labourer Lancashire Shepton Mallet
Matilda daur 9 Scholar " Ashton in Makerfield

Hi Mary

Thanks once again for all your help.

I agree with  you it all seems very strange! James the elder can't make his mind up where he's from!  Somersetshire, Ashton, Northumberland! I'll definitely have to investigate further. :) :) :)

Meanwhile - is there anyone who has the 1851 census or 1841 census Who  can find James and Ann?

Many Thanks

Jan

Hi Everyone

Just had a reply from a Rampling on GenesReunited - this his his quote

"This James is a real problem. I have not been able properly to place him. I can't help thinking that he had something to hide.

1861C gives his birthplace as Lawtham NBL
1871C gives his birthplace as Lothbury MDX
1881C gives his birthplace as A-i-M.
1891C gives his birthplace as Somerset!!

It is clear that his son Joseph, by his first wife, was born in Somerset (Shepton Mallet BMD 1846 q4 Shepton Mallet 10,442).

His first wife (Ann) died 1872 (BMD 1872 q4 Wigan 8c,66 "age 55") and he married Sarah Ann Houlton (1872 q4 Wigan 8c,131).

Incidentally, I think you'll find that James (b.1874) was a "brickcutter."

Anyway, my current suspision (no more than that) is that is worth looking investigating the possibility that he was a "returnee." Those who were transported to Australia could return once they had served their term. Maybe that's a bit fanciful but I have rarely come across anyone so apparently wishing to hide their real origin.

Kevin "

If this is the case, where would I search for James as a convict?

Cheers

Hi Melanie Roux...

I am a Rampling, the last of another Rampling line...

As yet I have been unable to link my London Ramplings to any of the other Rampling trees.....London, Lancashire, East Anglia, Devon/Hants or Aussie and NZ.

I have been trying for many years now and would love to find a link.

I havn't yet been on Geni.com but I will register and may I look at your tree....you never know!

Thanks Jan for letting me put this on your post, we are the only two who are listed on the surname interest table for rampling!.

Bill

I was at school in Cheshire with a girl whose surname was Rampling, she also had a sister about a year or so older, both born in Lancashire.  I won't give their names as they're probably still alive.  Their mother was a medical doctor of some sort in Manchester.  I can't remember what her dad did but judging by where they lived he must have had a job with a good salary.  Just checked, her dad was a medical doctor too.

If anyone wants their names please PM me.

I think your school friend was my sister Alison Grindrod (nee Rampling). She celebrated her Diamond Wedding two weeks ago (2 April).
Her elder sister Jennifer died last year.
Our father was indeed a doctor as was our mother (both deceased of course).
Good luck
John Rampling

Yes, it was Alison.  I wasn't in her friendship group at the Grammar School , although I knew her.  I don't remember Jennifer and Alison having a brother.  Sorry!  I'm surprised she is only just celebrating her Diamond Wedding Anniversary, as I remember seeing her in Hale, about 1960 when she told me she had just got engaged.  Presumably she had a long engagement.

I'm sorry to hear about Jennifer.
