I am reaching out with hopes someone will know something.
I am seeking 3 Weddell/Waddell brothers.
I last have them together on the 1861 census at Balleny Farm House,Currie,Midlothian.
They were listed with their father John Weddell & step mother Mary & four 1/2 siblings.
Their Names & birth years are:
Thomas Weddell born c 1840 at Dunse,Berwickshire.
James Weddell born Oct 1844 at Fala,Midlothian
Robert Weddell born Jun 1847 at Lauder,Berwickshire.
I am beginning to believe that they "might" have immigrated to ,who knows where.
If any of these three brother sound like they might be yours,..do drop a line.
Many thanks……Ann

Hi Ann,
Your topic title says you looking for them after 1866.
The message says your last sighting of them was all together in 1861 Census in the Midlothain. Do you have some knowledge of the whereabouts of any one of them up to or in 1866?
And in case they may pop up as possibilities in places/documents that cite their mother's name: What was her name & maiden name?
Cheers
AMBLY

I haven't come across this particular W*d*l* family before, but being interested in all W*d*l*s I did a bit of digging.
John Weddell or Waddle or Waddel (or any variation you care to think of) b 1803/4, Lauder, married Janet Mitchell, b1807/8, Lauder, date unknown
John b 1833, Lauder
Alexander b 1837, Lauder
Thomas b 1839, Duns
George, b 1841/2, Fala
James, b 1845/6, Fala
Robert, b 1847, Lauder
John married Mary Steen in Currie 1 August 1854
George b 1855, Currie
Mary b 1856, Currie
Isabella b 1858, Currie
Elizabeth b 1861, Currie
David b 1863, Glasgow
William b 1865, Glasgow
Mary Steen or Weddell married Alexander Nisbet in Glasgow on 26 August 1873.
James Nisbet b 1874, Glasgow
1841 census lists John Sr, Janet, John Jr, 8; Alexander, 4; and Thomas, 2 at Soutra Hill Toll, Fala
1851 census lists John Sr, Janet, John Jr, 18; Alexander, 12; Thomas, 10; George, 9: James, 5; and Robert, 3 at Balleny, Currie.
1881 Census lists Mary Jr, Isabella and Elizabeth at 65 Houston Street, Govan, with a cousin, Thomas Thompson, 15, born Linlithgow
1881 census lists Alexander Nisbet, Mary Sr and James next door at 67 Houston Street, Govan. Alexander was a coachman.
In 1841 John Sr was a tollkeeper. In 1851 he was a farmer of 357 acres.
So, John made a biggish step up from being a tollkeeper to a substantial farmer. Janet must have died betwen 1851 and 1854, when John re-married. They moved (why?) to Glasgow between 1861 and 1863. John died between 1865 and 1873, and Mary re-married, stepping down in the world from being the wife of a substantial farmer to the wife of a coachman. The girls set up as dressmakers, and the boys all dispersed.
Is 1866 the year of John's death?
Lots of food for thought there.

Ambly…Thank you for your interest and reply.
One brother,James Weddell, signed his fathers death registration in Oct of 1866 at Tradeston,Glasgow..
So I know that James was still around….It did not state where James resided as sometimes it does.
So my quest continues…..Ann

It might mean that James resided with his father.
What did James say his father's occupation was, as a matter of curiosity? And who were John's parents?

James Weddell's father..."John Weddell" occupation was a Joiner Journeyman at time of death in 1866.
His father was also John (but spelt) Waddell.
No baby name books back them..LOL

James Weddell's father..."John Weddell" occupation was a Joiner Journeyman at time of death in 1866.
That's a really odd career - if he was a journeyman in his old age he must have been apprenticed to a joiner when he was young, because he couldn't have trained in the time after they left Currie, even if he had wanted to start training at the age of 60. Joiner to tollkeeper to farmer to joiner. Very curious.
Aha! This begins to shed some light - see

I spotted the different occupations as well and gave it much thought…but..I have 3 census records, plus death Cert…also 2nd wifes death, and all verify as well as some certificates of birth of children from the 2 wives.
Research is always a challenge for our curious minds……keeps us thinking.
Thanks for the interest and chat. Cheers Ann

John Weddell's father, also John (Waddell) (1763-1850) was initially a farm hind (agricultural labourer , usually working with horses) then took over the tenancy of the farm Newmills (and Trabrown) near Lauder sometime in the early 1800s. John (1803-66 ,my gggrandfather) did work at Newmills in the early 1830s alongside his elder brother George but then was an innkeeper/tollkeeper at various Tolls - Klilnkhimin Toll, Carfraemill ; Clockmill Toll Bar, Duns ; Soutrahill Toll, Fala. He returned to farming as Steward (farm foreman) at Newmills then took on the tenancy of Balleny Farm, Currie around 1849.
Sadly he went bankrupt in 1862 and by his death in 1866 was in Glasgow with his second wife Mary Steen (and his second family). Mary had a stationer's shop. I assume that as a journeyman joiner in Glasgow and now in his sixties he would not necessarily have served an apprenticeship.
The three brothers sought are sons of his first marriage to Janet Mitchell who were at Balleny in the 1861 census but then disappeared (apart from James Weddell who in 1866 notified his father's death, before disappearing). I believe that they would have emigrated but have found no trace anywhere.

Aberheart,…thank you for the extra tid-bits..it all help.It seems that these 3 brothers left for places unknown (yet).
Always hopefull someone will come across these posts and say "hey, this could be mine"…especially if the 3 hung on to the spelling of Weddell instead of Waddell.
Aberheart….do you come down through John born 1833 or Alexander in 1837??
Cheers

I have Weddell in my family tree also from the Edinburgh area. John Weddell, born 17/11/1812 in Newbattle, Midlothian, Edinburgh was my Gt GT GT Grandfather. John had 2 brothers, David born 1808 and Thomas born 1811. As you'll be aware Weddell sometimes becomes Weddle or Waddell or Waddle etc! I would imagine there will be a connection between the families mentioned as it wasn't a common name.

These Weddell brothers ancestors were pretty much all Berwick born and raised.
I just checked my records back to 1735.
I do thank you for touching basis.one never knows.
Also noticed I have no David names in my Weddell research.
