Title: Trying to find a death in Johannesberg
Post by: amber39 on Tuesday 29 December 15 18:32 GMT (UK)
I need help to find the death of an Englishman who reputedly died in Johannesberg  in 1922.

John Edwin Speer emigrated to South Africa with his wife Mary Anne and their son aged 9 in 1919.
His wife and son returned to England in 1922 presumably after his death.

How can I obtain the date of John's death and his death certificate ?  The date of his birth was 1883 in Battersea London

Here are the details of his estate file held at the archives.  You can order a copy of it through eggsa.org  It should contain a copy of the death notice, so you could just order that.

Hi Amber
Not sure if you have managed to find out anything further on John Edwin SPEER, however I checked the burial register for Brixton Cemetery in Johannesburg and found an entry for:

Name: SPEER, Edwin
Age:   40 years
Buried: 11 May 1922
Section: English Church (Anglican)
Grave No: 6588 (bought by Mrs M A SPEER for John E SPEER and has private rights 6 Oct 1922, so most probably a gravestone).

Morning
I have found his death notice. Unfortunately I cannot download it at the moment. However it states:
Full names John Edwin Speer died ? May 1922 age 40
Dad - John Edwin Speer
Mother Alice - married in England
Wife - Mary Ann
Child John William Speer age 13

If you look on the postings you will find a way to look at the Transvaal estates/death notices.  Look for TAB. The year you want is 1922 and the batch must contain 48872. It is image 1066 onwards.  Hope this helps.
