I can't see a marriage, but is this her baptism? If so, the marriage may have taken place in the same church.

It wouldn't have been legal to marry in a Presbyterian church in England until 1837.
Quite a few Presbyterians from this part of Northumberland nipped over into Scotland to get married :D
Or they had an 'irregular' marriage at Coldstream or Lamberton :D http://www.rootschat.com/links/01gpp/ Coldstream is reasonably close to Etal.

Thank you JenB and what a good find, Carpenter fits well as in later census and certificates he is down as Joiner.
-
They are not showing up in the Northumberland marriage index 1813 - 1837 so I think you are right, Jen - they'll have nipped over the border as so many did.

I did look on Scotlandspeople but no joy, I always find that site difficult to navigate.
-
It's possible it was an 'irregular marriage' at somewhere like Coldstream. The records for irregular marriages are incomplete - if they were recorded at all ::)
-
Thank you JenB, Coldstream fits well with the family, but as you say may not have been recorded.

Hi irret, I would be interested to know if any of your Alder family were blind. My 3 x Great grandmother was Margaret Alder b1843, mother being a Mary Alder, father not stated. HOwever, when Margaret later married a George Davies in Montgomery, Wales she wrote John Alder as her father on the marriage certificate. I have not found a John Alder to support this information. All I know is that Margaret moved to Montgomery with her uncle William and his family, he was a widow. 1851 census confirms this info. The main issue is that if you do have members of your family who were blind then we could definitely have a connection. I would be very keen to know. Many thanks Sharon

Hi Sharon,
I'm afraid I can't be of much help, nothing showing but I will put on the back burner and if anything shows up I will get back to you.
