Hi All,
My GGGF was Richard Beckwith, born 1829 in Kirk Hammerton and died 1893 Manchester. His wife was Jane who died in 1903, also in Manchester. I have been unable to trace the burials of either of these two people and would really appreciate any help in this matter.
Regards,
Paul

Hi,
That's my family and I have those records. I just cannot find the burial records, cemetery etc.

I think GrannyM is pointing out churches where it would be worth accessing the burial records.
I see in 1891 RG12; Piece: 3238; Folio: 91; Page: 20 Richard is living at 5, St Clements Place.
-
I can't see anything on Ancestry - Lancashire or Manchester burials - nor is there an entry on the website Manchester Burials. Nothing on Genes Reunited Manchester Burial records.
1891 - they are living at 5 St Clement's Place - N W Manchester
1901 - Jane is living with her daughter in Nelson Street - N W Manchester
My assumption would be that they are buried or even cremated within the area of N W Manchester. Manchester City Council might be your best bet, but I think you might have to have definite dates of death.

The Manchester & Lancashire FHS have information about burial grounds & where burial records may be.
http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/data/BurialGrounds-Mar18-1.pdf
Sorry - just noticed this probably duplicates your GR information BumbleB.

Manchester City Council give the following cemeteries which would have been open in 1893:
Manchester General, Philips Park, Southern. Gorton and Blackley didn't open until later. Ardwick and Cheetham Hill are on FindMyPast - so that rules them out. Mancehster Crematorium records were destroyed in the 1940 blitz. There are some memorials on Manchester and Lancashire FHS - nothing for Beckwith.
Non-conformists :-\
Manchester City Council website is very useful and informative.

Thanks All,
Do you know when did the cremation of the deceased started in England?
Thanks,
-
Manchester Crematorium opened in 1892 - the second in England. Cremation was illegal, in England, prior to 1885.
-
Just another little bit of info - from LancashireBMD, both deaths were registered in "Central" sub-district of Manchester.

Hi Cancan,
Indeed they are family. In fact. Betsy is Richards sister so that's some more information that I did not already have. Richard and his wife need more investigation but at least the trail is becoming clearer.

Good News!! :) Thought with the names it could be a possibility,
The family seemed to use St Thomas's Ardwick for their marriages, did they use it for baptisms?
Checking the registers for St Thomas's Ardwick it seems the burial registers are missing from 1854 to 1924.. So it could be a good possibility that they were buried there. You haven't stated place of residence from the death certificate, so working on the 1891 St Clements Place, he seemed to be still living in Ardwick.
The church is surrounded by flat gravestones, it might be worth contacting the MLFHS to see if they have transcriptions of them?
cancan :)

Lancashire archives, Preston have MI for St Thomas's on microfilm according to their list. :)
-
Many thanks,
Indeed they were living in the Ardwick area at the time of death so this could be the answer. I will see if any transcriptions are available.
Pardon my ignorance but what does " MI for St Thomas" mean?
Paul
-
MI = memorial inscription ;)
-
I have the MI's from inside the church, but not from the grounds,
they are not listed on the inside.
Good luck!!
Keep us posted! :)
-
Many thanks all. I will now check various sources for the MIs !
Best wishes.

Hello All,
I checked with the MFLHS and the external MI records they have so far for this church are prior to 1890 so the search continues.

Hi Paul,
Cannot make any promises, but in the New Year when I get a day off work, I'll ask a friend of mine if she fancies a visit to the church and see if we can have a nosey at the gravestones on the grounds. See if we can spot anything?
Cancan :)
