I have just started to research my wife's Fitch family name in Essex and Suffolk.
So far, from census records, I have managed to find Ernest William Fitch 1886 - 1972, Arthur Fitch 1858/9 - ?, Elijah Fitch 1825 - 1898, and Robert Fitch 1796 - 1879.
Although I cannot see the derivation of the following records, I can see from other family trees:- Thomas Fitch 1771 - 1835, Thomas Fitch 1751 - ?, and Robert Fitch 1730 - ?. The trail then seems to stop.
So, any help really appreciated on 1. Confirming the origin of the family tree records above and 2. Finding the ancestors of Robert Fitch 1730.
Thank you.

You do need to be very careful with online trees - there are countless threads about them on here. It only takes one person to record the wrong information and everyone else copies it! If there are no sources attached to the trees, all the more reason to be careful. For instance I can see 2 trees that have Elijah Finch father Robert and have the same date, but one has his mother as Maria Hockley and the other Susannah Skippage. They also give different death dates.
Can you tell us exactly where these people were living?
Was Ernest William Fitch the Reverend Ernest W Fitch who was born in Clacton about 1887?
-
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, it was Reverend Ernest William Fitch, born in Clacton On Sea.
We have Arthur Fitch as being born in Great Bromley, Essex, Elijah Fitch being born in Long Melford, Suffolk (although one record said Mitford, Essex) and Robert Fitch born in Chedburgh, Suffolk.
Thanks again for your help.

Is Robert Fitch the one who married Maria?
-
Yes, Maria Hockley on Jan 1, 1822 in Long Melford. He died in 1879 in Sudbury.
I think we are correct up until that point. A little sketchy beyond that.

Thank you.
Your findings agree with some of the public family trees.
I assume that Robert's baptism record is based upon his year of birth (1796)?
-
Baptisms then often took place a few weeks after birth, so I would think he was born late 1795 or early 1796 for a baptism in Feb 1796. Unfortunately it is just a transcription and no image online.

Thank you.
On some public family trees, they list a Robert Fitch as being the father of the Thomas Fitch that was married to Mary. Also, that Robert was born in 1751. Is it possible to confirm this?
This Robert Fitch was married to Frances Adams on 09/09/1749 (although one record says 09/11/1749). I have written down that he was born in 1730...can't remember where that came from.

That probably came from this record

I want just replying and your latest mails came through. So I need to rewrite this.
This latest information you have given me is extremely useful. I will digest and continue my search from there.
It may be that I need to look at marriage/birth/death certificates.
I see there are some Fitch family trees that go right back to the Fitches and the De Montfitches/ De Montfiquets. Who knows, we may get there!
Thank you so much for your help.
