Hi Australian Rootschatters,
James Joseph McCormick was born in Belfast to William McCormick and his wife Mary (probably Curran ).His date and place of death (as above) is recorded on his parents headstone in Milton Cemetery in Belfast.
I'm wondering if any of you good folk may have access to historical Sydney newspapers that may give more information on how James Joseph died.
Many thanks,
Maggie

Trove is normally the first stop, didn't see him there
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper
(note - if his death wasn't 'newsworthy' and the rest of the family were back in Ireland, you might have more luck in the home papers)
http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexsearch/keyname.aspx
there is a record here, possibly him, under Intestate Estate Case Papers. 1893, James McCormick aka McCormack, died "The Hospice, Sydney", a clerk, native of Ireland.
This could refer to Sacred Heart Hospice, Sydney? His death appears to be listed under 'McCormack' on NSW bmd, father William, mother unknown

Possibly his funeral notice 10 May 1893 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article13929780
THE FRIENDS of Mr. JAMES McCORMICK

There does not seem to be an entry in the NSW coroners' inquest files for this man so it's likely he died from illness, especially as the death occurred at hospital - Parramatta hospital according to the funeral notice.

There is a entry on RYERSON for the Sydney Morning Herald FUNERAL Notices of 12 April 1893 for a James McCORMACK Funeral that day.
You could access that via TROVE.
The 10 May 1893 James McCORMACK is also on RYERSON, from a DEATH notice.

'The Hospice' indicates he was ill rather than there from an accident etc.
Given he was 19 and it was 1893, possibility he was suffering from TB?
Agree with jorose, probably Sacred Heart Hospice, Darlinghurst, Sydney.

From death certificate in intestate papers ...
James McCORMICK died 11 April 1893, at Hospice for The Dying in Victoria St, Sydney. He died of phittisis [??] and his father William McCORMICK lived at 9 Windsor Gardens Belfast.
Hang on and I will upload the photos and send you a link.

As intimated prior "phittisis" TB. no Longer used Term.
actually spelt. "phthisis"
Sad end for such a young person, probably came out here to try and get over it, dry climate thing.

Hi Maggie,
I sent you a pm with a link to the photos of the intestate file. it has his baptismal certificate and his parents' marriage cert in there also.
regards
Ros

So the file had all three certificates ..... his baptismal, his parents marriage, and his death registration. I wonder why a lad in the 1890s in NSW would have had a copy of his parents' marriage certificate... perhaps it had been sent from Belfast by his parents after his death, as they would have been his next of kin for any distribution of his estate.
Well found Ros
Cheers, JM

Three cheers Ros :)
What a treasure trove to score all those certificates.

Thanks Dundee for the clarification re the 2 notices indexed.
Had hoped that they were 2 different people :P :P
The mention of St Vincent's Hospital confirms that 'the Hospice' was Sacred Heart Hospice, Darlinghurst.

Well of course I should take all the credit for this ... ;D ;D
It was Jorose who found the entry and since I was going there today I just added it to my list.
But the probate/deceased estate/intestate files are soooo variable. One of the probate files I photographed today had only 3 pages without anything much of use (as far as I could tell).
I must admit that I just skim and click and don't really read or absorb.
I do wonder if the lady he was living with (in the best sense of the phrase) was a relative ...? I'll have another look now.

The lady he was living with was described as a friend - Mrs E Thornton, "Lor na Doon", Springwood.
