Title: Knowles Family
Post by: Bernie21248 on Thursday 26 November 15 15:36 GMT (UK)
Could anyone help me out with any information on the family name KNOWLES, in Lancashire, prior to 1750.
Specifically the parents of Thomas KNOWLES b.1750, in Sefton. Appears to have married an Elizabeth BYROM in Winwick in 1771.
The Knowles family line I am researching seem to be mainly from the Leigh, Leyland, Sefton and Chorley areas.

So did your Thomas name any of his sons Michael? If not and he named a son William -- (although that is a more common name) -- then the baptism with the father Michael may not be the correct one.

Thank you all  :)
Will certainly check out the Lancsope site, thank you.
Would certainly have liked it to be Michael and Ellen, but I think William is the more likely. Have not come across any Michael's yet in this line, but William and Matthew seem to be the main KNOWLES male Christian names.
My grandfather was a William :)

I can only see one Thomas Knowles with a father William in Sefton but that was in 1742.
Baptism 7 Aug 1742 St Helen, Sefton, Lancashire, England
Tho. Knowles  Son of Wm. Knowles
    Abode Sefton

Can you perhaps tell us how you know that your Thomas was born Sefton in 1750?

Thank you for pointing me in the direction of Lacsopc, it is a gold mine of Knowles information. Not sure now where I came across that Thomas KNOWLES, Sefton information, probably Ancestry.  I am certain now it is the wrong Thomas Knowles. The Thomas Knowles I think I am seeking is Thomas Knowles b.1749 Winwick, bap. 21st May 1749, f. William KNOWLES. I feel sure this is the Thomas KNOWLES that married Elizabeth BYROM 1st of June 1771 Winwick.

And it's free!!

We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to the volunteers who work so hard providing us with all this information.

We are so lucky in Lancashire -- we have Lancs OPC and Lancs BMD - all work done by volunteers -- and then we have the Lancashire/Manchester/Liverpool records on Ancestry as well.

Yes sincere gratitude and thanks to all involved, certainly Lancashire is much better than most counties, where such records are scattered and often expensive to access. Good on you Lancs OPC :)

Hi there,

I wondered if you are still researching your Knowles tree? I have an Ann Knowles who married into the Aldridge family in 1834.

I have her born in Sefton or Kirkdale in 1814. Her parents were James & Mary Knowles. He was a cow keeper living in Lambert Street, Liverpool.

I have James Knowles as being born in Sefton 1782 but admittedly that was more guess work via Ancestry so wondered if this was also your branch ? I cant find his marriage to Mary either.
Ive just been looking at LOPC, which is great but there are so many Knowles'  I'm not sure which one is mine!

Would welcome your thoughts.
Thanks
