Looking for any info on this person.
It appears he was a Gunmaker in Birmingham circa 1880.
Borne in Stratford, household record for 1861 & 1891 but nothing in-between.
There is a trading address of D Gotobed & Co. 330 Lodge Road, Birmingham but unsure what date it would be. Also found 1 reference to 350 Lodge Road.

Doesn't look like that's the one I'm looking for then.
With what I presume is a fairly rare surname, I'd have thought it might be fairly easy.
My D Gotobed was obviously well trained up in the industry of gun making and must have been highly skilled.
Unless ............
It is possible he was a retailer and as often happened a Gunmaker would put the retailer's name on a piece. Retailers were usually hardware / ironmonger type outlets.
How could I check the business activity of D Gotobed & Co. 330 Lodge Road, Birmingham (1870-90 perhaps).

Where has this information come from?
What is the last positive information you have on your D. Gotobed?

Well I've had a good look around & there's very little on this Gunmaker.
He's obviously the same as Ladyhawk found & must have been involved in the gun trade over a short period between the censuses.
The trade involved a number of independent specialists such as barrel makers, stock makers, lock filers, engravers etc. & the parts assembled & proofed by the gunmaker & this is what he must have been doing.
Possibly what's happened is that he's bought a small business assembling sporting guns & simply stamped his name on them & then sold it on with the new owner doing the same.

Researching my childhood home and I have the old deeds and mortgages from 1876.
I have an original mortgage, on parchment, where, on 25 February 1885, Mr David Gotobed of 331 Lodge Road, Birmingham loaned £600 to Mr Martin William Maidment of Pitsford Street, Birmingham against surety of property and land in Prospect Road, Moseley.
David Gotobed's signature is clear.
Happy to provide a jpg if any use.
