Post by: AnitaWellard on Wednesday 25 November 15 15:11 GMT (UK)
Hello,

Would anyone know how to proceed with finding  details for an adoption which was registered in Manchester?

Thank you

You don't say when this happened, but the official advice is here:
https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records

Formal adoption only started in 1926 (in England), so there will be no formal records before then.

If you know their name after adoption and their year of birth, you can check the GRO Adopted Childrens Index at any of the 7 GRO host sites, get the official reference and apply for a certificate.

    The Library of Birmingham
Bridgend Local and Family History Centre
    City of Westminster Archives Centre
    Manchester Central Library
    Newcastle City Library
    Plymouth Central Library and
    The British Library

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customers_want_to_know.asp#Adoptions

I can check the index for you next time I visit if you can't get to any of the host sites. Please send me a pm with the name and year of birth.

The Adoption certificate will not contain the name at birth.

Is the person still alive?

Have you applied for a copy of the birth Certificate?

Try requesting a copy of the BC  and see what information it may contain.

It is NOT  unknown for an adopted person to retain the names that they were born with (as first names)   and simply to gain a new "surname"
