Can anyone please help?
I been unable to find my grandmother Ethel Thurley born in 1886 on the 1939 Register.
I do not know for certain where Ethel was living in 1939 but when she died she was living in Church Street Tempsford, previously I believe she lived in Mill Lane also in Tempsford. I also understand that she was living in Station Road, Sandy in 1924.
I have tried all combinations and the only candidate on FindMyPast seems to be;
Ethel Husrley 1886 Bedford M.B. Bedfordshire
I am reluctant to pay for this transcription for a 'possibility'. Is some clever Rootschatter able to find out the address of Ethel Husrley from the register?
Any help would be appreciated.

The Biggleswade Chronicle, Fri 1 Aug 1941, has a report of the marriage of the youngest daughter of Mrs Ethel Turley, 9 Church St, Tempsford.
-
Hi Telula
Thank you for that bit of information. I have a photo of that wedding (my mum was a bridesmaid) and am sure it was Tempsford Church so it seems very likely that Ethel was living in Church Street, Tempsford in 1939. Just need to be able to find Church Street, Tempsford on the Register!
-
Yes, there was a picture of the happy couple in the paper. Dared not mention names re. rule about living persons

The entry which I found for Ethel Thurley born in 1886
was possibly Ethel Husrley born 1886 living in Bedford M.B. Bedfordshire
There are no other entries on the 1939 register for the name Husrley so I assume this is an error.
A search for Church Street returns 5 options;
Would Church Street Tempsford be listed as either
Ampthill R.D. or U.D.
Bedford M.B.
Biggleswade R.D or U.D,
I have looked at the entries and cannot find Thurley (correct, Husrley or Turley (from the newspaper report you gave).
-
To get any more detail from the 1939 Register I think you're going to have to shell out £6-95.
Tempsford wouldn't be included in Ampthill, nor in Biggleswade UD. I'd have thought that it would be Biggleswade RD. Bedford MB (Municipal Borough) doesn't look to be right either, as Tempsford is 10 miles from Bedford. Perhaps she was living in Bedford? It's going to cost £6-95 to find out.
-
It looks like the Ethel Husrley is in Ashburnham Road. Quite central in the town near Bedford railway station. Some way from Tempsford or Sandy
-
How do you find the street Lizzie? I can't get any more detail than what's in the preview. They seem to have even removed the piece and item numbers from which you
used to be able to find others living in the vicinity.
-
Thank you Lizzie I will look at that. Do you know the house number in Ashburnham Road?
Did you find Ethel in Ashburnham Road, Ampthill U.D. or
Ashburnham Road, Bedford M.B. Bedfordshire
Ethel's husband had died earlier in 1939 so it is possible she may have been staying with friends or family.
-
I found the address by trial and error and a bit of searching with wildcards
putting * street, then * road. Once I had established it was * road, I started through the alphabet A* road etc. Luckily it began with A so didn't take too long. In a second browser window I did address search to get a list of all the streets in Bedford MB.
This Ashburnham road is the one in Bedford MB. It's quite a long road and looks like some houses have multiple households, so would be a long job with trial and error on address search to get the right number. Maybe you could find an electoral roll for 1939 to see if there are relatives names you recognise from that street.
-
Have you got an address from the death certificate of her husband William Harold Eustace Thurley who died June quarter 1939 in Biggleswade RD.....
...... it might say that wife Ethel was informant & give her address.
-
I have 1938 Bedford Directory.... there isn't an Ethel Husrley or Thurley listed in Ashburnham Road...... neither does anything similar appear in the alphabetic listing
-
Apologies - "Turley! was a typo - it's "Thurley" in the newspaper report.
-
The listing for Ethel says there are two more people officially closed, implying that they were born after 1915. This would fit for a widowed lady with two children. If it is the right Ethel and she was temporarily staying with relatives they won't be her siblings, but could just be a married daughter and husband.
William Harold Eustace Thurley marriage registration unfortunately has two Ethels as possible brides. My guess is that it's Ethel Guest.
B'wade Chronicle 26 May 1939 has brief notice of William H E's death and says the address was 4 Church Street Tempsford and said he left one son and five daughters.
That's the same street but different number to the notice of the daughter's wedding in 1941.
Is Church Street Tempsford one of the missing addresses or did Ethel move temporarily to Bedford and back to Church street but to a house down the road. I would guess Tempsford would get listed under Sandy.
-
The Bedfordshire Times & Independent, 13 Dec 1940 reported the marriage of Miss Thurley (no given name), daughter of Mrs Thurley ( no given name), 7 Campbell Road, Bedford, and the late W. Thurley.
You can find the marriage on FreeBMD, with the bride's given name, to confirm if this is the family you are chasing.
Can confirm maiden name "Guest" after checking births of 2 daughters on FreeBMD
-
If you check that address in 1939 it gives a different Thurley family.
-
looking at the newspaper article for groom surname, the marriage can be found on Freebmd and Miss Thurley's forename found. It looks like she was born in 1919. her mother's maiden name matches with amarriage between a Florence and Mr William F Thurley in 1913 in Biggleswade district.
-
1938 Bedford directory has at 7 Campbell Road..... Mrs Florence Nellie Thurley
1939 Register says she's born 1889 & there are 3 other Thurleys in household plus 2 more closed records
-
Had been pursuing similar line and found William F's death in 1935, Biggleswade
-
Ethel HUSRLEY seems to have the same birth date (Sept.1 1886) as that of Ethel THURLEY (on death reg Mar 1971).
Sorry if that's been pointed out already.

Probate calender entry for William Finch Thurley of 74 London Road, Biggleswade, died 27 Sept 1935; Effects £790 to widow, Mrs Florence Nellie Thurley
-
It is looking too much of a coincidence since the Bedford Ethel has the same birthdate. But it would be nice to find the residents in the two addresses in Church Street Tempsford and eliminate them. In 1939 the A1 would have been Church Street, maybe it was officially called something different although locals knew it as Church street.
Current maps have Church Street as dead end to the north and what I think is a "new" road running parallel with and just to the east of current A1 heading off to St Neots and to link the East and west sides of Tempsford.

The listing for Ethel says there are two more people officially closed, implying that they were born after 1915. This would fit for a widowed lady with two children. If it is the right Ethel and she was temporarily staying with relatives.......
The HUSRLEY household containing Ethel & 2 others was at an un-numbered house in Ashburnham Road; it is the 11th entry on the 3rd page (each of 20) if you work through all the addresses in that street. Also Ethel's status is widowed.
The other 2 people could be daughters Dulcie Eva born June 1924 & Sylvia Mary born Sept 1920, but we'll never know - unless you can prove that they have since died.
Hemmum - I suggest you shell out £6.95 ** to see the entry ... if Husrley is indeed mistranscribed Thurley then you can ask to get it corrected... The image will also show entries for other unclosed people in that same stretch of Ashburnham Road which could identify where they were staying, if checked against a 1938/39 Bedford directory.
later ** seems FindMyPast now are offering 60 credits for £4.99 using discount code 1939VIEW, but only until end of 26th Nov....however credits valid for 90 days

Thank you all for your help and my apologies for not thanking you earlier but I have not been online as been unwell.
I know Ethel and her husband were living in Church Street Tempsford when her husband was involved in an accident in 1936.
In May 1939 Ethel and her husband William H E Thurley (also know as Harold!) were living 4 Church Street, Tempsford when he died but Ethel was at 9 Church Street when her daughter married in 1941. I believe another married daughter was living at 4 Church Street in 1941.
I remember my grandmother living in Church Street (which were council properties) until she died. The A1 ran behind her house with horrid outside toilets half way down the garden (newspaper on a nail).
I would love to know who was living at the addresses in 1939.
I will take your advice and shell out for the entry in Bedford. After all your help I am more confident that Ethel HUSRLEY may well be my Ethel Thurley and I would not be wasting my money. How easy is it to get closed entries opened? All of Ethel's daughters have sadly died although one went missing overseas so I am unlikely be able to prove her death!
John you mention;
‘The image will also show entries for other unclosed people in that same stretch of Ashburnham Road which could identify where they were staying, if checked against a 1938/39 Bedford directory.’
Where can you view a 1938/39 Bedford directory?
Lizzie also mentioned an electoral roll for 1939. Are they available online?
Thank you all again for your help. As John a big thank you for the money saving code!
-
Paid my money and the entry is definitely for Ethel Thurley and she is living between (above) 24 and (below) 22 Ashburnham Road. The neighbouring occupants names are Garnet, Martin and perhaps Gellings and Fanning, names which ring no bells.
I have reported the error in the transcription but it seems that I will have to renew my lapsed subscription to FindMyPast before they will consider opening the closed entries. John any more money saving codes!!
-
From 1938 Bedford Directory.... #22 Ashburnham Road had no occupant, at #24 was Charles Albert Joyce - however he was not there on 1939 Register. The other name you mention are not listed in the directory.
Another money saving code is 1939offer, again giving you 60 credits for £4.99.
FindMyPast will only check out closed records if you have a subscription, otherwise you have to contact TNA & pay £25... Even if you have a FindMyPast subscription it does not give you access to the 1939 register details, you have to buy credits.
-
Hi John
Thank you for the information regarding the 1838 directory.
I wondered if you had a money saving code for a FindMyPast subscription as I did think if I renewed my lapsed subscription I may be able to investigate opening a closed record on the 1939 register. I read from their site;
'We provide a free Evidence of Death checking service for all Findmypast subscribers (World and Britain) via an online form. Subscription information can be found here. Subscribers must be signed in before completing a form to request an officially closed record to be opened.'
I think this is basically what you said.
Thank you again for your help.
-
Just to say you can access the 1939 register from FindMyPast for free if you visit the National Archives at Kew.... however you'll only see what you can see if you pay FindMyPast to unlock a household... you'll not see the closed records
-

FindMyPast just sent me email.... as it's Black Friday they offering 50% off any subscription....
...use code BFRIDAY15 but this expires 30th November....
.... however any subscription will NOT give you access to unlocked records on the 1939 Register, you still have to buy credits to do this
-
Thanks for the code John - you are a star! Have just treated myself to an early Christmas present and renewed my lapsed subscription! Will probably get a square bottom now sitting on the computer!
-
Thanks.
Had taken up the £1 offer last month and its scheduled to run out on 30th ;D
