Thanks for all of that. Frederick Briggs - middle name likely to have been William Died 23 Dec 1905 Melrose South Australia.  I have his parents as Robert and Ann (both born about 1781) but can not verify this. I believe he may have come to Australia in about 1848 but that is a deductive guess, maybe with his grandfather, uncle or brother!!!!!

Thanks David we are talking about the same person in SA.

Jo that was helpful although I have his born about 1828. Does anyone have any information about his siblings.

It would appear every second family in Northumberland area was named Briggs!!! and all managed to have John and William in their names!!

Thanks to all this has been helpful but still can't find a date, ship or place he arrived in Aust.
His death is 23 Dec 1905 at Melrose South Aust. That part is not a problem.

Thanks Jo, yes that is what I meant.
Thanks Annie for your kind words.

If this was my Family (as I have done for mine) I would be buying the 1856 M/C, the 1861 M/C and and they Death Cert of 1905.

The Hamilton link is what confirms it for me.

As to his arrival he may have arrived elsewhere and moved to Sth Australia.

Trish :)

Hi I'm new to this chat room. I have been looking for Frederick William's death for a long time. ( He is my g-g-grandfather. Your info confirms everything I have found). My Aunt went to Melrose and told me that she had found his burial there, but I've never been able to confirm it. The only contradiction to your date is that he was described as the late F. W., when his daughter Eliza or 'Dolly"married Robert Trail Muir in Albany, in 1902. But it might be explained if he had deserted the family. He is in the SA police Gazette for desertion around the time of her birth. (They gave a desription '5ft9" sandy hair and beard slight build I think)  I couldn't find a marriage record for Elizabeth and FW, but they had a daughter Frances Ann in Adelaide in 1851  3/212. She married a Williams around 1870. I have a photocopy of the marriage certificate of Mary Ann Ford nee Mc Evoy and FW 1861. My grandmother told me stories about Mary Ann and we have her photo. I also found that Hawkhill is now a B & B. You can see it on google streetview. Love to hear anything more.

Welcome to Rootschat mariaf,

Hopefully  davies51 will reply to you soon.
Although he hasnt been on Rootschat since 2015.

Just out of curiousity can you type up the details from the 1861 Marriage Cert you have please?

I also realised I made a mistake 1856 was a Birth Reg for a Son of FW and Elizabeth Briggs, not a Marriage.
I also see your Frances Ann 1851's Birth Reg now.

Trish :)

Hi, From memory
Mary  Ford widow, father Thomas, F W Briggs, labourer, father Robert, married in a private house in Copurhouse, January 19th 1861,
She married John Ford, 31st May 1858 in London.
My Gt grandmother was Charlotte and I have her birthdate as 12th February 1874. (Probably Winnie)
I linked up with  the Murphy family on ancestry who are descended from an unregistered sister Emily born about 1865.
Looking at my notes I'm still not convinced about the deathdate. I have a note next to it which says 65 yr old buried in the Catholic section of West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide. I don't think the catholic bit is likely at that time.  Anyway love to hear anything more.

Hi,

FW Briggs is my 4th Great Grandfather.

The Frederick William Briggs buried in West Tce Cemetery with the Death date of 24/12/1905, was aged 65 years, making his year of birth around 1840.  There is a FW Briggs born in Adelaide to a Henry Briggs and Johanna Buckley in 1840, whose gravesite this most likely is.

There is, however, a Frederick Wynham Briggs buried in West Tce cemetery (gravesite unknown) with the death date of 10/12/1900, aged 74 years, making his birth year around 1825. This does fit in with the birth Year of the FW Briggs from Northumberland with Father Robert Briggs.

I was also looking into leads to Albury Western Australia as his burial place, though nothing confirmed.

Hi Paulrp Davies 51 and Trish
If it is an unmarked grave it may well be a mis-transcription of William for Wyndham. The age and the year of death fits.
I think the other Frederick William may have been his son by his first wife Elizabeth Leigh.

Paul are you a descendent of Mary Ann McEvoy (Ford) or Elizabeth Leigh?

My Grandmother kept a photo of her Granny (Briggs).

If you would like a copy please let me know.
Maria

Hi Paul
Just read your message again.
I also have Mary Ann's death certificate.(1917)
When my grandmother's family, the Nugents left Tambellup, she stayed behind in a Nursing Home, her daughter Eliza (Dolly) had married well in Albany.
