Hello all,
I need a bit of help tracing a branch of my family tree, does anyone have any info on the O'Loughlin family who lived in Newry county Down, in particular Thomas, who was born around 1829 and on the 1901 census it says he is a widow living with his two sons Terence and Thomas at 19 Hidemarket southward Newry, Down.
I have some info on my Gt Grandfather John O'Loughlin and Gt Grandmother Jane from the census already, but I would like to find out about Thomas' wife, I am stuck as to where to go next, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I would query several things here.
First, the address in 1901 census is Hidemarket with the D.E.D. being South Ward, Newry. '19' is most likely just the emuerator's number for the household.
Now to the actual census return-

Thomas O'Loughlin is age 72 yet his 'sons' are aged 22 and 14. So, although they could be sons from a marriage late in life, it's possible they were his grandsons, etc. In any case, birth certificates for the boys would give names of both parents.

Did you also notice that Thomas' birthplace is given as Co. Clair?
Since the family was Catholic you could also try searching for the boys' baptisms in the Catholic Parish registers-

Thank you for replying,
I will use the links you have given here to investigate further and hopefully get somewhere.
I did notice that Thomas' birthplace was Co Clare.
Thanks again

Following on from BallyaltikilliganG, here is the Newry RC parish baptism for Thomas, baptised 6 November 1872, parents recorded as Thos McLoughlin and Anne Galligher (3rd entry up from bottom of left page):

GRONI online has the civil marriage record (under Ann Gallagher to Thomas Oloughlan) - the Ulster Historical Foundation website search index and familysearch indicate that both bride's and groom's fathers were called Patrick:

Gaffy,
thank you so much for taking time to find the information on the parish register and cross referencing.
The info looks promising that Anne Gallagher was married to my Gt GT Gt Grandfather Thomas, hopefully I can confirm this.
Thanks also to BallyaltikilliganG for the reply and link to a useful site.

Hi Gaffy
I am also related to Thomas OLoughlin and have followed the links you posted to the baptism infor for John OLoughlin (my Gt Grandfather) - thank you for that great information.
I wonder do you know is there some way to search easily through those same baptism records for others? or is the only way to scroll through each page and look at each record?
thank you.

The registers aren't indexed so you do just have to scroll through each page.

thank you aghadowey. Very good to know this.

Hi There,
May not be of much help but I remember talking to a lady called Mary O'Loughlin just before Christmas this year who told me that her relatives were from Newry, she lives in Rathriland in Co Down. My mother was also O'Loughlin which is how the conversation got started. my mum was from Mohill Co Leitrim.
Regards
George.

Hi Thom
Thomas oloughlin (son of Patrick I believe) born in Clare 1829 is my 3rd great grandfather.
Looking at your posts we seem to have the same family. My great great grandfather is also John who married Jane Morrison.
My great grandfather is Joseph, father of my grandfather Brendan oloughlin (Warrenpoint, Co. Down) he moved to Birmingham when he was very young to work too before coming back.
If you have a family tree I could look at and I share with you, please contact me.
Thanks =)
