Title: Henry Nickolls/Nicholls of Longford Tasmania
Post by: suemccall on Friday 13 November 15 21:51 GMT (UK)
Hi I am searching for the parents of Henry Nicholls who married Charlotte Wilkins in Tansor, Northamptonshire, England in 1826 and migrated to Tasmania.  I found an indication that he was born in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire in 1797 but I haven't found any evidence to support this.  My suspicion is his wife may have been a Berkeley (a middle name of his oldest son).  Would be most grateful for any information.  Thanks in advance.

You need to be searching in Huntingdonshire.http://www.genuki.org.uk/index.php
Where did his place of birth come from? Was an obituary published?

I know it is not what you are looking for, but I did find Charlotte's DOB 19/6/1792 and baptism in July 1792 Northamptonshire. Her parents were Samuel and Anne. Maybe your Henry was born a little bit earlier than 1797.
regards.

Hunts Marriage Index has no Nicholls/Berkeley marriage.

What was Henry's parish of residence shown as in the marriage entry?  Do the witnesses provide a clue?

Hi bedfordshire boy

The OP states that the couple married in Northamptonshire.  The record is on FreeReg.
Henry Nicholls, bachelor, of Leighton, Huntingdon.
Charlotte Wilkins, spinster, of this parish (Tansor, Northants.)
The witnesses both have the surname Webster, no Christian name recorded.

Bev

(Would this not be better off on the Hunts. board?)

Hi Sue
I have quite a bit of information about The Nickolls, Wilkins and Webster families. h Charlotte Wilkins  was from Bath, her parents were Charlotte Webster, from Deene, Northamptonshire, and  Rev. Thomas Wilkins of Weston, nr Bath. My husband is a direct descendant of Henry Nickolls and Charlotte Wilkins. Charlotte is described as being "from this parish" (Tansor) on the marriage record presumably because she was staying with her mother's Webster family, who were from that area.(Charlotte Wilkins' maternal grandparents were John Webster and Elizabeth Dexter, both deceased at the time of this wedding, 1826)  Charlotte Wilkins was born in 1798 in Bath, Somerset (bapt 5 April 1798, St Michael, Bath) and Henry Nickolls (the "k"is the correct spelling) was born in Little Stukely, Huntingdonshire (bapt 1 January 1794, St Martin, Little Stukely). Henry and Charlotte emigrated to Tasmania (then Van Diemens Land) in 1827, per the "Admiral Cockburn". I have not found as yet any other reference to a Berkeley in the family, other than it being the middle name they gave their son Henry. It may have been a friend's, godfather's or mentor's name of course and not a family name.
Henry Nickolls' parents were John Nickolls, born Buckworth , Hunts, in 1765 and Millicent Martin, born Elton, Hunts,  in 1769. I haven't found their marriage yet but their first child was Henry, so I guess they married in about 1793 or earlier. John Nickolls died  11 May 1845 and Millicent died 30 Dec 1837. They are both buried in the churchyard of St Mary's , Buckden, Hunts (now Cambridgeshire).  I have visited St Mary's and photographed their gravestones.
Please let me know what else I can help you with.
Jude

I know. But the marriage in Tansor was Henry's and the OP was looking for Henry's parents. It was his parents marriage which I was referring to.
