As if we didn't have enough problems changing from Windows 7/8, Microsoft has decided in their wisdom to update the Windows 10 currently available.
15 minutes (@75Mb/sec) download then now in the process of installing.
Sufficient to be aware for all of us using a laptop get the power adapter out as it's going to take ages to install?
Brian
Message comes up - Preparing to install! - 20minutes.
After a reboot new install screen comes up, like watching paint dry so pick a time when computer not required for a hour or so! :o :o
1hr and 40minutes to be precise!
-
Mine had trouble on the update it tried and could n't so went back on later. It tried a few times then said it was collecting info in respect of the failed update, then restarted the computer a couple of times but managed then. I also had a call from a friend who I think has 8.1 and she had trouble with updates and appeared to be stuck. Already tried switching it on and off did n't work. I told her to switch it off and leave it for half an hour and then switch it back on and hopefully it would resume. I waited for a call back and when she did, it had worked!
-
The above update was 1 of 2, first o'k but notified the second had failed.
Reset to check for updates and success, just wish I knew how large a file I was downloading and how long to complete.

At least you' e got Windows 10 - my laptop is still awaiting the go-ahead from Microsoft and I'm stuck with 8

? I reserved mine months ago, haven't downloaded it yet and keep getting reminders. Did you reserve it??
-
No - it won't let me. I contacted PC World, where I bought it and was told that MS and the manufacturer (Samsung) probably hadn't sorted out incompatibilities yet. Luckily I don't use it much any more - my new Mac is so much more reliable

Would this link be of any use to get Windows 10 onto their computer?

I am glad I read your post. If I had not seen this I would certainly have been panicking when nothing appeared to be happening for ages in certain stages of the download/installation. I didn't time it but it must have taken around the same time as yours did.

well after that 'meaty' upgrade I cant see any immediate/obvious difference .... no change to the odd way that Updates are performed (compared to the succinct control and visible progress one got with WIN7) .. Windows Security Essentials aka DEFENDER still doesnt display an Icon in the System Tray until prompted and 'File History' steadfastly refuses to work !
-
So we all know what to expect from the latest update:

Yesterday I discovered that my Windows 10 upgrade was not working properly i.e. not receiving automatic updates. I had to fix this problem by running a DOS screen as the Administrator and running the system file checker command:
sfc /scannow
After that finally completed (30 minutes later) it detected a couple of faults regarding Windows updates. I also had other problems such as right clicking the clock in the System Tray area did not open the option to change the time/date. I kept getting error messages about Elements missing.
I then went to Device Manager and went through the process of checking for an update for every single listed device and found about 30% needed updating . The most important ones were AMD related.
Everything now seems to be working.
-
I bit the bullet (took the upgrade) at 3.40 this afternoon. I shuddered at the 20 minute interval on screen, but in the event the upgrade took less than 5 minutes, no problems so far and no noticeable changes. No doubt I have those privileges to come!

What I forgot to mention earlier, Microsoft is in a position to 'snoop' on our browsing habits using windows 10.
I originally modified the feedback to Microsoft to minimize what information is being picked up, this update I found has disabled these settings so have resorted to installing a program called Anti-Beacon by a company called Spybot. (Free to download and setup instructions inc)
Brian
[Spybot Anti-Beacon is a standalone tool which was designed to block and stop the various tracking (telemetry) issues present in Windows 10. It has since been modified to block similar tracking functionality in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems.]

Brian - I assume that is only if you use their Edge browser. I deleted it and carried on using Firefox.
Roger - I downloaded Windows 10 the day after it became available, and I've not had any problems. I updated from Windows 8.1, my husband updated from Windows 7 and he hasn't had any problems either. We do get frequent updates but they happen during the night when my laptop is snoozing. My OH turns is PC off, so he has to let the updates run in the mornings when he turns the PC back on again.
Old Bristolian - I didn't get an invite, I just used a link given on Roots when it first came out - possibly the one Brian has given. I wouldn't take any advice from PC World, I'm sure the technical people on here are for more informative and helpful. If you need computer advice, I would always look for a local independent computer supplier/service. When I was looking to buy a new laptop and trying them out in PC World, they told me that I wouldn't be able to run any of my programs with Windows 8. Needless to say I didn't get my new laptop from them. It was a load of tosh anyway, as the program makers had modified their programs to run on Windows 8 and when I updated to Windows 10, they all still worked as normal.
-
Thanks Lizzie, I only went to PC World as that is where I bought the d.....d thing! I was talking to Samsung about another matter yesterday (the laptop is a Samsung notebook, model no NP3530EC) and they insinuated that Windows 10 will not work on it although it's only 3 years old. No reason, but they said it was MS's problem and I should talk to them. Having said that, on trying again last night I was told my request to upload was accepted and I should wait for notification. Hey ho, thank goodness for my Mac and iPad
Steve
-
Steve - I wonder if it's something to do with it being a notebook, rather than a laptop or PC?
-
It could be - I didn't know it was a notebook until this week! I bought is as a laptop back in 2012. I'll see what MS come up with. The Windows 10 icon is still sitting there, but won't activate

Nowadays, laptop computers are more frequently called notebook computers, though technically laptops are somewhat larger in size than notebooks, in both thickness and weight.

Some laptops are incompatible with windows 10 for one reason or another. In some cases the manufacturer has not produced drivers for all their devices.
The main Samsung web page seems pretty useless and doesn't seem to be able to direct you to the right place for compatibility issues. However the link below takes you to a page where you can put your details in and find out what the issues are. If you put in Laptop, Series 3 it will give you more information.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/windows10/upgrade.html
It does state that if you have 32bit OS you will have problems.
Samsung or MS fault? They will of course blame each other.

Redroger,
The Windows 10 upgrade takes well over an hour (more like 1 1/2 to 2) including a 20 minute download period. It's like a new installation. I think your five minute update was just an ordinary update.

I've spent the last hour "chatting" with an MS helpdesk engineer. Gave them access to the laptop via remote control and things seemed to be moving along. Now a reboot instigated by him has failed, the chat window has finished and I'm left in limbo. Neither chat nor phone contact requests are working. Apple Mac looks better all the time....

Simon, It does seem to have been the upgrade, though I have not yet checked the build number to confirm it, too busy using the machine. Your comments about Samsung, I fully agree. Amongst other things Kies no longer works, can just about instal on the machine, but try to open it and it immediately stops! As you say their site is a complete mess. I think that part of the problem with my phone is that it is a Galaxy3 GT19300 3 years old, and the version of Android has been upgraded twice. Difficult if you want to free up phone space for photos; however as a work around I paid 88p for "Wi Fi file transfer Pro" which is useable and can transfer photos onto the computer; a decent workaround at least.

I let Windows 10 upgrade last night and it took about 90 minutes in all, plus a bit more when I switched on this morning. No problems as far as I can see.

Here we go again! :o
Whilst checking updates, another found, update to previously downloaded file.
(Took all of 5 minutes) :)

Not only is the updates something of a mess they use it to spy on us too!!

My PC upgraded a few days ago, apparently successfully. It did change some of my privacy settings but I soon changed them back (not that I'm complacent - I'm sure we'll never know just how much they can find out about us).
For anyone in doubt the upgrade does a full re-installation, just like the original upgrade from Windows 7/8, but leaves all your program and data files intact as far as I can tell.
I have disabled just about all the special features of Windows 10 and use a third party browser, email client, etc. In this state it is hard to tell it isn't Windows 7 8)
Mike.
-
Interesting, might help friends of mine who haven't upgraded. I seem to be OK with it now, but still from time to time use 7 on my Netbook.
-
You can still use Internet Explorer 11 instead of Edge if you want.
You have to run it manually though by using File Explorer to navigate to:
C:\Windows\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Microsoft have often stated they do not want to collect person data but they are being forced to by various government agencies around the world. I doubt if changing your browser or using various privacy settings is going to make a great deal of difference because governments demand that ISPs provide them with customer browsing data - justifying it by saying they are trying to catch criminals and terrorists etc.

Redroger,
You were quite right Simon; I saw it was coming at around 6.45 last night and as I knew dinner was imminent and wanted to watch at least some of the football I decided to take it there and then. The 20 minutes suggested was total nonsense, it took around 65, twenty of those being over the last 1%!! Then the fun started. I have a virtual machine (VMWare) on this computer and the previous evening i had a little difficulty getting it to run the internet. I fixed that; but after the upgrade in retaliation the net didn't work in my real machine. I eventually fixed that and then had a go at the virtual machine, which I eventually fixed. Main problem is I am not sure how or why in either case. I eventually logged off at around 11.30p.m. This morning all OK (so far) except that Chrome was no longer my default browser.Anyway, all done and my earlier postings were obviously a false alarm.

I had W7 and took the free upgrade to W10.
Transition was lengthy but no problem. :)
Just one problem that I am not technically able to fight off (and it is hard) microsoft's insistence that I do not use Windows Live Mail but instead use Microsoft's Windows 10 system which is not my preference >:(..... so I am being bombarded by microsoft >:( >:(to switch and I resent their strong arm >:( >:(tactics but too technically weak to know how to fix it :'(

Me too, haven't used any Windows for e-mails for years now. Thunderbird is very good.

Windows 10 works best with ALL the new features turned off, and using third party browser, email, etc ;)
The biggest problem is that they released it before it was finished . . . that, and trying to make it touchscreen friendly for the kids at the expense of the more serious users ::)
-
Isn't that usually the case though? Incidentally my W7 netbook is taking its time (30minutes +) to shut down. Why?

Updating? Got stuck in a loop?

No, neither of these. In the end I terminated it, switched on again and no problems this time.

Mike that sounds just what I would like ........ could you kindly explain how to turn the 'new features off and what 3rd party browser and email you use'?.
You've got to bear in mind that at 88+ I've been around a long while and technology is too fast for this old coot who was born when a man carrying a pole with naked flame on the tip to light the gas lighting in the street and 'that *was* technology'(only 80 odd years ago)' 8) 8)
Off now to find out more about 'Thunderbird' and what to feed it with.
Joe ... a 8)

Thunderbird is a Mail Program.
Firefox is a Browser..
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/?product=firefox-3.6.8&os=osx%E2%8C%A9=en-US
From there you can download it.
Initially you should get a 'stub', this should go direct to your Download folder, you then click on the stub in Download folder and the Program itself should just download and the open when finished.
It puts an Icon on Desktop which you can then click on to use the Web Browser at anytime.

Mail Program,
Click 'Save file' (for both) and same instructions...

Joe, what I do may not work for everyone, but the first thing, if you haven't already done it, is to go to 'Privacy' in the Settings, go through the entire list and turn everything off using the little buttons. This will prevent a lot of unneccessary 'apps' running in the background, sending your data to all and sundry, and you can always turn something back on if you find you need it.
Once you have installed Firefox and Thunderbird and got them working to your satisfaction you can make them the default browser and email; they usually ask you if you want to do this.
I find it best to change one thing at a time so it's easier to trace the cause if there is a problem.
I have assumed you are using a conventional PC. Things will be different for a tablet or a touchscreen PC/Laptop.
Mike.
-
Hallmark and Mike .... you have both been of great help .. everything is now OK so thank you both so very much. :) :)

I'm trying to un-install 10 from my husbands Toshiba Satellite laptop it says it's doing something but we'll see.
Since the upgrade we've had a stuck curser, works for about 2 minutes and no internet access despite the machine saying it's connected. Other pc's in the house are working fine on 7 and 8.1 so bye bye 10 >:(
If it doesn't work I guess it's a trip to pc world :'(

From personal experience I wouldn't touch PC World with a 20 foot pole! A small independent computer company will give better service. This applies if out of warranty though.
