Title: Kate Waters in school or working clothes?
Post by: FWaters on Friday 13 November 15 13:56 GMT (UK)
Hi

I'm trying to guess an approximate date for the attached photo.  The second in from the left (next to the lady who appears to be crocheting) is my grandmother (born in 1900) but I'm hopeless at guessing age so hoped there might be a clue in the girls clothing.

Thank you
Fiona

Good evening,

I would have agreed with that until I looked at the bottom of their boots. Unless they put on soft over boots when entering the factory.

Nailed boots and explosives don't go together.

I think they look a bit too old for school but it does look like a work uniform.

My first thought was munitions workers but John makes a good point. They may not of course been working with explosives but involved in other types of war work as this was standard dress for the time.
I would suggest at least late war & maybe even post war. 1917-20.

I think all the girls look very young - at a guess,  anything from early to late teens. :-\

The young lady second from left and the one far right look physically quite mature. School leaving age for my parents in the 1930s was 14, I think the ones I mentioned look older than that. (But having said that I was more or less fully grown by 12 so what do I know.   ::)   :) )

I think they all have young faces. Some are just more flat chested than others.  ;)

Hello Fiona
I have just joined site and seen your posts. Kate Waters is my step great aunt , my grandad was Frank Kingston, and Kate's mother (also Kate nee Hazard) was his step mother she married my great grandad Richard Kingston.
I have been researching the Kingston family for 30+ years , grandad use to see Herbert Waters and Margaret but he was the only one of his step siblings he kept in touch with , my mum (now in her 80s) remembers visiting their tiny house in Walcott Street, Hessle Road.  I have a photo of Kate Waters and Richard Kingston I believe on their wedding day
Best Wishes Gill

Good afternoon,

It seems that safety wasn't of the highest priority at that time.

https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/9-women-reveal-the-dangers-of-working-in-a-first-world-war-munitions-factory#:~:text=Munitions%20workers%20played%20a%20crucial,to%20join%20the%20armed%20forces.

Although a lot of these women were engaged in making shell casings and cartridge cases, some were putting the explosives in to the cases. Seems at odds with the navy practice of wearing felt slippers when working in the magazine. Even in the days of Nelsons wooden navy.
