Title: Just had my first 1939 Register "Evidence of death request" back from Findmypast

"We have investigated your request regarding evidence of death and on this occasion, the record shall remain closed

"The reason for this is the name is not listed in the household."

Excellent! A negative result is still a result.

So I now have two new research questions: (a) where was the person I'm looking for in Sept 1939, if he wasn't in that household, and (b) who is the mystery redacted person?

As fun as this guessing game is, I'm hoping the other death certs I submitted come back with more positive results.

Has anyone successfully had a black box removed and a record opened yet?

It's good to know that they are turning requests around relatively quickly.

I'm keeping an eye on the transcription errors I reported on Tuesday. As they were reported at TNA I won't get a notifiction.

You may never know where your person of interest was until their 100th birthday plus one day, the same for the redacted person.

If they were newborns in Sept 1939, you've got a long wait.

Dawn - did you infer the redacted individuals will appear the day after their 100th birthday? My father would have been 100 years and two days today - and he's not there yet

I think I remember reading that FindMyPast would unredact closed records once a week.

pstainthorp - your mystery person may be completely unrelated, a lodger possibly? Can't know for sure until their record is opened. Remember, if you've already used credits to buy that record, you won't have to pay again to see new people as they are revealed :)

Not confident of this being added to a subscription before they reach 100 years and a day then?  ;D

I'm not having a great deal of luck with these.

I submitted 4 death certs for 4 closed records.

The first came back as "The reason for this is the name is not listed in the household" as I've already said.

The second has been opened - hooray! And I've learnt some new information about a relative - double hooray.

The third and fourth: I received emails telling me the records have been opened, but when I checked they haven't. Findmypast have just told me they have run into "technical" problems opening some closed records, but that they expect to have those problems fixed by tomorrow.

An update from FindMyPast. Have any other RCers encountered this problem, or is it just me?

I did not receive an email so decided to check the records; they had opened the wrong record (I think that person is still alive)!  An email was sent explaining this; I had sent a death certificate for a male, they opened the record of his sister.   I am still waiting for a response.

Oops. That's not a good mistake for them to make. At least mine are still safely closed  >:(  while they sort out whatever is holding them up. Bit confused as to why I had the confirmation emails, though.

I did get a confirmation email about 2 days after I found the incorrect record had been opened; however as TalkTalk have been having major problems getting emails to me it could be their fault.  ::)

Still waiting for a response about their mistake and when the correct record will be opened.

Nanny Jan -  TalkTalk have been involved in some major scandals lately, so I'd watch your details and e-mails.

I tried opening my dad's record who was born in 1932, and sent in an affidavit my dad signed to allow them to open his record.  FindMyPast came back and said the following:

We have opened the closed record you requested. We have also opened the other closed records of that specific household for reasons which we cannot disclose.

I've just looked at the record of my maternal gran and my parents again to see who the redacted person was and it has been opened - yippee.  It is one of my mother's nieces (so one of my cousins).  She was born in 1931 and is shown as "at school", she was 8 then and I would guess was just visiting.  Interestingly, although she didn't marry until 1955 (some 14 years later), her maiden name has been crossed out and her married name inserted.  She died in 2002.

There are also some redacted names living with my paternal gran but they've not been opened yet.  I think one is probably one of her daughters born 1917 who only died 2011  and her youngest son born 1913 died 1975.  My dad born 1912 is shown living with my mum, and his twin sister is shown with her mum, so I'm guessing the redacted people are younger than born 1912.  If not, then I have no idea who these people are.  I'll just keep checking until the records are opened.
