James Holt was born around 1832 I believe in Middleton. He is the son of James Holt a weaver and according to the lads marriage certificate he was aged 27 in 1859 when he married in Coventry. He joined the 4th Light Dragoons in 1855. Any more info on the family would be appreciated.

Maybe? This from Lan-OPC.org.uk

I know the year is a bit out but is this one more likely?
Baptism: 6 Dec 1835 St Luke, Heywood, Lancashire, England
James Holt - Son of James Holt & Sarah

There are rather a lot of James Holts in the Rochdale / Todmorden area!

I did a search myself on familysearch org and found one for 1832
James Holt born 22 April 1832 in Rochdale
Father James (weaver) Mother Sally
This looks odds on the one I am looking for. Now I have to look up his parents.

:D If I was you, I would first check to find out if he is on the 1841/51 census, when does he use pob as Middleton?
EDIT Who did he marry 1859 Coventry and where are they 1861?

Middleton was on his service record pob.

Hi again, and I apologise, I forgot to welcome you to Rootschat, who did he marry in 1859 Coventry and where are they 1861 census?

Thank you for the welcome. James Holt married Hannah Webb in Coventry in 1859 but went to Dundalk with his regiment until he left the army in 1865. His daughter Matilda was born in Coventry in 1862 and son George in 1871 but I have no record of him on a census. His wife was in the 1881 census living with George and her daughter Matilda in Nottingham.

PS who were the witnesses at the 1859 marriage?
-
I would like to find out why James does not feature on the Coventry or Nottingham Census of 1871 or 1881. Sometime after George was born in 1873 in Nottingham and up to 1881 Hannah was widowed. I can't find a burial record for James. Any ideas?
-
The witnesses to the marriage were Susanne Thornton (who signed with a cross) and Geo Jeayes. I know Hannah was in Service when she married James.
-
OK will look some more, who is the "Niece" Maria Stevens aged 18 b Notts in 1881, ie whose Niece James or Hannah's?

-
I have no idea my friend.
-
;D May be worthwhile then looking into just who she is!
In a similar fashion in 1881 Hannah Holt has 2 Boarders Mary A Woodward aged 10 and Edward Woodward aged 8 both born Notts, in 1891 Hannah M aged 52 is living with a widowed William Woodward 45 b Calverton, Notts

Geo Jeayes the witness to the marriage was probably my ancestor who was a parish clerk in Coventry.
