Title: Historical TV documentries/programmes
Post by: Jane Masri on Wednesday 11 November 15 17:04 GMT (UK)
Are there any recent or 'now playing' programmes with a historical flavour that I might watch on YouTube or one of the I-players?
I've exhausted, Antiques Roadshow, Heir Hunters, Family Finders etc.  Just got Downton Abbey once a week now.  Need MORE  ;D

I'm interested in this too, specially now that Downton Abbey has finished forever! So So sad ...

(I still haven't seen the last episode and am avoiding spoilers so please don't give the game away if you've seen it.  ;)) I am desperately hoping for a Christmas special.

So I need something to fill the void so will be interested in any recommendations.

Jane, though more of a period drama I really enjoyed the recent series of Poldark (not currently airing but may be available online - I think I saw it on itunes but there is a cost involved - there may be another way for you to view it) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poldark_(2015_TV_series)
The main character is very easy on the eye too which is no bad thing.  ;)

Do you like documentary fly on the wall type programmes?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4403524/
(I have seen others in a similar vein on different subjects which I need to look up as I can't remember titles)

Also, if you like Downton, oddly enough I find myself recommending an Australian TV series which I really enjoyed (bit of a similar idea to Downton in that is in an historical soap opera). Once again I am unsure if it is available to you but some googling might tell you:
http://www.australiantelevision.net/a-place-to-call-home/series1.html
(the programme was cancelled after series 2, and through a bit of public outrage, a third series has been made and is being aired on pay TV - I haven't seen series 3 as yet)

I know there are many more but my mind is a blank at the moment, but I will let you know if and when I think of them ....

Another old one - "History Cold Case"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1642373/

A bit formulaic but the stories were interesting.

"American Experience" programmes, public broadcasting documentaries on US historical themes, are interesting. Can be found on Youtube.

Hi Jane,
Now don't laugh but I saw a show the other night that was just lovely -- Great Canal Journeys with Timothy West & Prunella Scales.  Their journey on the Shannon-Erne waterway even had some family history in it!  Fabulous.

I can recommend the 2-part documentary 'Inside Holloway' which has been on Channel 5 recently.  It had a lot of the history of the prison and I found it fascinating.

There've been loads of trails recently on the BBC for historical winter series including Dickensian things. Never a shortage.....

Did you watch 'The Village' on BBC. So far there has been 2 series, the first series was 1910's and the second in 1920's. It's a period drama a bit like Downton but is more to do with the working class.

You can get them both on DVD but this channel has got all of them except the last 2 of the second series:

There have been lots of interesting history programmes on BBC 4 .Many superb programmes by Lucy Worsley which include the three Georges,Royal bedchamber, programmes on Romance ,and others.
There have been programmes about dangers in Victorian ,Edwardian homes etc.A superb programme very recently on servants .
I think we watch at least two history programmes every week.

Thanks Guys.  Some wonderful viewing there  :)
Upstairs, Downstairs, now there's a golden oldie, remember watching the original series, might be good to revisit that one!
Some that were mentioned I have seen.  Particularly liked the canal one with Pru Scales!

There is/was a 'new' series of Upstairs Downstairs. I think the timing was wrong with it airing about the same time as the first series of Downton Abbey if I remember correctly.

I think the competition beat them by a long shot, and I don't think they bothered making any more. ....

Garrow's Law on the Drama Channel is a decent enough watch.   Based on /inspired by an 18th century barrister who believed in social justice etc

Just watching 'Restoring Britain's Landmarks' on Channel 4 - some fascinating buildings and wonderful craftsmanship.

I've been staying in properties owned by The Landmark Trust since 1976, - and so am very interested to see this series. I'm hoping that they look at the Clavell Tower in Dorset, - (one of my favourites).

Agree with suggestions of The Village and Garrow's Law. I loved Garrow's Law. The Village is excellent but could be described as "gritty". Both well worth watching.

For something lighter have you seen "Lark Rise to Candleford"? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lark_Rise_to_Candleford_(TV_series) (In this you will see Brendan Coyle as the 'father', who I think left the series to join Downton Abbey as 'Mr Bates' so did not appear in some of the later episodes.)

And along the same lines:
Cranford http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0974077/
(I loved this series and was lucky enough to be staying in Lacock as they were transforming the village for filming. Amazing to see.  :)))

(Do a bit of research to make sure you view the series in the right order  ;))

I admit to have "binge watched" all of the above series.  ;)
