I am beyond frustrated with the register. I purchased the 5 record subscription and wasted 2 opening up what I thought were the right records only to find that they aren't. Three left but I can't find a single person I am searching for. I am doing a variety of broad searches...like last name and Wiltshire, last name and birth year, etc. I even looked at every Louisa in Wiltshire and even searched just by a birthdate.
If anyone has been having success with their searches, are you able to help me?
I am looking for William (Bill) HERBERT and Louisa HERBERT and Ceridwen LEWIS. I know that they moved from Abertridwr, Glamorgan to Corsham, Wiltshire around 1937. They were definitely there before 1939. I don't have an address for them and they may or may not all have been living in one house. Also present with the Herberts would be a Gladys Herbert born 1917.
William Herbert born February 1875.
Louisa Herbert (previous married name Davies) born 17 April 1882
Ceridwen Lewis (nee Davies) born January 7, 1903
I believe Corsham is in the Chippenham registration district.
Any help would be gratefully received.

For starters, the 1939 Register isn't arranged by Registration District! It's arranged by Borough or District Councils!
There is a Ceridwen Lewis (Wilkins) born 1903, living in Abercarn Urban District?
I think the name is brackets is a later married name.

I have a female name with brackets on the 1939 Index. Phoebe Estelle Nierses (born in India of Armenian heritage) is enumerated as Nierses (Kerr) on the 1939 Index. But she did not marry Gordon Oliver Kerr until 1944. I do not think she had met Gordon in 1939. Most likely it was a name added to her records after she married.

My mother in law was single in 1939 as were her two sisters. They were all living with their parents. They all are listed in the register with their married names with their maiden name in brackets. One married in 1940 and the other two in 1944. Because the register was updated until 1991.
But I have found a 1933 marriage for Ceridwen M Lewis and George T Wilkins in Newport (Mon) district Q4 1933 11a 534
So if it the right Ceridwen, this has the married name in brackets not the maiden name.

The only Ceridwen who comes up with the exact birthdate is Ceridwen Williams in Bedwelty UD, Mon. There is a marriage in Neath district in 1934 between Ceridwen Lewis and Albert E Williams. If a woman married pre-1939, only her married name was on the register.

When the register was completed on 29th Sept 1939 the name on the form would be her maiden name. Her married name would have been added later in pen,at any time up to 1991 when the NHS stopped using the 1939 register for it's own purposes.

I know that, I did put in my response that it was updated until 1991. But the point I am making is that every woman that I have looked at who was single in 1939 and subsequently married, is indexed in their married name, with their MAIDEN name in brackets afterwards.

LizzieL - yes I agree - so are mine. Shown on the register under their married name, with maiden name in brackets. OK, I've only got 4 of them! I haven't opened any of the pages to verify :) One changed into the surname I was looking at, and 3 changed from that surname into other surnames.

So. I'm not losing my mind...none of them are there! The suggestions you made don't pan out with any of the family facts.
I guess my investment in the 1939 register was for naught. Disappointing after all the hype.

I think that we need to put some of our rellies on the back burner for now and come back to them when the hype has died down and hopefully they've corrected a few of their transcription errors.
My grandad was 46 and away from home in the Territorial Army in 1939.
I only found him by his christian name and month of birth.Day and year are wrong.
His surname was WORTH,but the transcription says ???th.
Luckily I knew he was still in Cheshire somewhere.
The family lived in Macclesfield,but he wasn't with them.
