Hi everyone,
After 18months of searching for a death for James Henderson, l found a newspaper article on FindmyPast, I couldn't locate anything on Ancestry so went reading the newspapers, I found an article in an Aberdeen Scotland paper obviously placed there by a family member, and the place he was born.
All it says is: Henderson: At Chiswick Hospital, London James Milne Henderson, plumber, third son of William Henderson of 80 Hutcheon Street, Aberdeen.
Did the Chiswick Hospital have another name, and where will i find a death certificate, Ive looked long and hard.
He was born James Mather Milne Henderson on the 22 February 1862 the paper is dated the 30th March 1907, and called the People's Journal.
James parents were William Henderson and Isabella Adam.
Would appreciate your thoughts and any help you can offer.
TIA
Jennifer

Think it was Hammersmith Hospital, I cannot recall there being a hospital in Chiswick.
-
Chiswick would fall under the Brentford Registration District.
Hammersmith would fall under the Fulham Registration District.
The only death that might fit (from FreeBMD) is:
December qtr 1905
Fulham district vol 1a, page 227
Henderson, James age 51
-
Agree with you KG, but my family who lived in Chiswick always got sent to Hammersith Hospital, again not sure there was a hospital in Brentford, may be it closed by the time I lived in Chiswick.
-
Don't forget that a death is registered in the Registration District in which the death occurred!
Not where the deceased was living. ;D
So that death I found would fit with a death in Hammersmith Hospital?
-
The dates are way out though - why wait 2 years before putting an obituary in the paper and his age doesn't agree. That one was 51 in 1905, Jennifer's James would have been 43.

Apart from the dates being (on the face of it) out, even if Chiswick Hospital should read Hammersmith Hospital, then this would be Hammersmith RD, not Fulham. The hospital in Fulham was Fulham Hospital (now the site of Charing Cross Hospital)
-
Hammersmith Registration District was created in 1915 ;D
Created from part of Fulham RD.
I know the date and age are out, but I can't see a better fit?
And, if there is no date of that newspaper snippet, maybe it took the family a year or so to get the news back to Scotland?

I have to agree with you groom, i can accept the couple of years that are common with certificates, but 8 years......hmmm. There is nothing that really stands out.
My other question is is it possible that when it says Chiswick Hospital that it was a convalescent home or a poor house/work house.

Yes Groom thats James's marriage to Elizabeth. Elizabeth died in 1899.
all i can really go on is the newspaper date of 30th March 1907, its under deaths not obituary.
Two of his children, were adopted in Upper Holloway to the Simpson family in 1901 Charles Phillip was already adopted and in the 1911 census his other brother William Gordon is also with the same family, the adopted mother was also a witness to James Hendersons marriage in 1892 to Elizabeth Malcom Mackenzie. William Gordon Henderson in 1901 was a patient at Garrow Home.

So we can rule that out as he was married to Elizabeth, unless he remarried?

I did find this snippet; Chiswick isolation hospital, opened in Clayponds Lane, South Ealing, in 1904, (fn. 91) became a maternity hospital, serving both areas in 1921.

You say where his children were in 1901,but have you found where James was?
-
I found a james Henderson in 1901 living as a boarder at 154 Cloudesley Road, Barnsbury, Islington. the James in question was a carpenter though not a plumber but he was a widow and was aged 40.
So im not 100% convinced that it is him

If Chiswick Hospital was the one in Clayponds Lane or was actually in Chiswick then the registration district at the time would have been Brentford, now Ealing.
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/ealing.html
If you click on the link for the reg office there are contact details.
Please note they do not answer the phone ever, and the call centre will not take a message for this type of enquiry as they are so busy with recent births, deaths and marriage arrangements, so you will have to send an email asking of they have the death registration. Give all the information you have: full name, age at death and place. Explain you have the death from a newspaper article dated 30 March 1907. They will only say yes or no, if yes and you want more details you will have to pay for the cert.
This could be one of those occassions when his death entry is simply missing from the GRO index.
