Title: Mother of Margaret from St Quivox/Newton
Post by: Kipper5 on Sunday 08 November 15 22:00 GMT (UK)
I am trying to the find more about the parents of Margaret Brown from St Quivox/Newton on Ayr. If I could only find a post-1854 Scottish birth/marriage/death record for her, I would ascertain her mother Mary's maiden name, and hence more about her Brown roots. But I am having difficulty.

She appears in the 1841 census in Newton on Ayr. Parents are John Brown and Mary Brown.
Margaret is age 15 (but probably rounded), born in Ayrshire. I think she was born in 1823 in St Quivox/Newton.
She has siblings Alexander and James, but I have hit a wall with them, and so am concentrating on Margaret for now.

I think Margaret married Robert Anderson, weaver in St Quivox in 1849 and there are census records for them in St Quivox until 1871. From the census records they seem to have had Jane in 1851 and Hugh c1852 and John c1866, all born in St Quivox. (there was also William and John, born before they were married)

Can anyone find what happened to them after 1871? Or find a birth record for any of the children?

Thank you.

Wow, that's fantastic! Thank you, Colin.
I'd become quite bogged down with it. There are so many Browns in the area.

You don't happen to know when Margaret's brother, Alexander Brown was born, do you?

So pleased..

1881 - 77, Cross Street, St Quivox, Ayr, Ayrshire

Robert   Anderson   Head   Married   76   1805   Weaver   St Quivox, Ayrshire, Scotland
Martha   Anderson   Wife   -   65   1816   -   Newton, Ayrshire, Scotland
Hugh   Anderson   Son   -   20   1861   Slater   St Quivox, Ayrshire, Scotland

So either Martha is mistranscribed or Robert Remarried.

Thank you everyone for all your prompt replies.

Colin, regarding the 1841 census record with John and Mary Brown (and children Margaret, Alexander and James), I also think John's age has been mistranscibed and should be as it is in the 1851 census record, i.e. c1786. I haven't been able to find out further info for them after 1851. (There is a 1871 census record and subsequent 1877 death record for a Mary Brown nee Shaw, widow of John Brown, seaman in Troon but I wanted to confirm if she was Shaw by checking out daughter Margaret's later records).

Nanville, thank you for your info on the Anderson family. I do indeed see that Margaret was probably the second wife. I will check out the birth records for the children born after 1855, and the 1910 death record for Margaret herself, and should confirm Margaret's maiden name. It may well be Shaw or Niel, as suggested as Colin.

Nanville, you don't happened to know where Margaret lived in later years, do you? Did she stay in Ayr?

Thanks again.
