My great-great-great-great-grandfather John Davies was born there in about 1790.
A Google search will reveal several entries that are all to do with my cousin's research into our tree but they don't help me pinpoint it.
Many thanks as always,
Malcolm

Cruglas uchaf would have been fairly near to cruglas isaf. The isaf and uchaf mean lowerand upper
-
Thank you both. That seems to fit nicely with other relations around Llanegwad (so probably totally wrong then ;))
-
I've just had a thought ... ???
Would Uchaf be lower down the hill than Isaf as would be the case with these Criglas???
-
Uchaf would be higher
-
Except that if Despair's positioning is accurate, then it is lower (i.e. downhill) from Criglas Isaf?
I can't see a stream along which it might be "upstream".
-
The clue is in uchaf ..upper.
If you were looking at fach/bach it would be a smaller house. A larger house in vicinity with same name would have mawr/fawr attached to name to indicate a larger property.

You can see a "Crug lās" bottom left of screen and a "Crug lās" top of screen.
Have checked the Parish registers 1785-95 for "Abergwili" and "Llanegwad". Cannot find a John Davies in either for this time frame - indeed "Davies/Davies" is quite rare. There are entries for "John David". However, the entries don't carry much detail - date, child's given name and wife's given name (not every instance)! Abode not recorded.

Firstly, a big "thank you" to those who have replied to my initial enquiry. I think (hope) I have solved the problem ...
John Davies' son David (1827-1899) ran The Plough Innn in Felingwm Uchaf as did his son Walter. In the census, Felingwm Uchaf is described as "the hamlet of Meiros" in the parish of Llanegwad even though it is the former that had the pub, shop, etc. On the Bartholomew's map, that I found thanks to Hanes Teulu's link, Crug las is shown 2½km to the west of Felingwm Uchaf. However, on the modern OS, it is identified as "Bryneiddan" at GR 485248.
I am assuming this is Criglas Uchaf until my next visit when I'll knock on the door and ask!

:)Thank you very much for this he is also my great * 4 grandfather, and I did not know this location. My line followed to the Plough in Felin Gwm and then Glynllydaw Farm just outside Brechfa and on to Ammanford.
