Looking for information on Henry Owens born 29th May 1914, Bothwell, Lanarkshire Scotland who was a well known Scottish Boxer and fought under the name of Jake Kilrain. He married Nora Gallagher 8th July 1937 in Scotland. I am looking for his death certificate and have searched Scotland's People but can find one. Possible he left Scotland and moved further afield. Can anyone help find a death certificate?

Hi Annie,
i might have an interesting item regarding jake the boxer, can I ask your relationship with Jake please?
-
I am not related to Jake Kilrain but my Aunt was writing a story about him. My grandfather did a portrait painting on the boxer in the 1900s and we were interested to know of its whereabouts. I remember the painting from my childhood and it was given to a relation of Jakes family by my father.
-
Hi Annie, thank you for your prompt reply,
I was looking to trace his family as I have a piece of boxing history regarding Jake,
Do you know if his family are still in Scotland?
-
Wish I could help you but I had no reply from any of his family. The only person who was able to help us was a gentleman called Miles Templeton who is a boxing historian and knew quite a lot about Jake and he me be able to help you. Do you mind me asking what it is you have?
-
Hi
If you like I can email Miles and ask him if he is Interested in them or he may know someone who is.
-
hi, thanks but i will leave things for now
-
No problem but if you change your mind I can email him

Hi I stumbled across this discussion while browsing info about my grandfather Jake Kilrain. I would be very interested in anybody that had information about him.
-
Hi
I originally started the discussion re Jake Kilrain but I don't have any information that I can pass on. My Aunt in Canada was writing a short story about Jake as her father had painted Jakes portrait in the 1900's. I remembered seeing the painting as a youngster and knew that my father had given it to a relation of Jakes. My Aunt wanted to try and get a photo of the painting and I had found out that it had been hanging in a well known pub in Baillieston, Glasgow but when the pub had been recently renovated the picture had been given back to the family. Sorry but I can't tell you any more than that.
-
Yep that all makes perfect sense. My aunt in Canada has a framed oil painting of him, i would be able to get a copy of it for you. It may not be the same painting. Is your Aunt still writing the book? My mother ia Jakes daughter, and would have information if you needed any. Can ask who the artists name was and whether your aunt finished the book?
-
Sorry but it was only a short story that my aunt was writing for a Scottish Magazine. If you want to give me an email address I can get a copy of the story. My aunt who wrote the story also lives in Canada. If it is the same painting it will have my grandfathers signature John McVey who was a well known local artist and I am sure that she would appreciate a photo.
-
Oh we would very much appreciate a copy of the story. My Mum is fit and well so I'll ask her if she knows the artist. My Mum moved down to Middlesbrough in the early 70's and it was whilst visiting my Mum that Jake suffered a heart attack playing golf with me and my Dad in 1984. I'll see what i can do regarding the painting, I'm sure my Mum has a photo of it. Is there a PM facility? I dont want to put my email address on full display.

I know his son Harry (Henry) very well

Your grandfather , I knew him as Jake Kilrain, was a very good friend of my father ,John Donoghue( Who played for Celtic with Mc Grory, Thompson etc from 1926 to around 1930) They both worked at the Union Club in Renfield Street around in the 1950,s. I met him on quite a few occasions Always very friendly to me although he had quite a fearsome reputation The last time I saw him was in late 1965 just before I emmigrated to Canada lHe was working at Hamilton Race track. always remember he gave me a tip for a horse FLIGHT MASTER( Lost in a photo finish0. My father spoke about him quite often his fight with Ernie Roderick at Shawfield etc. I once saw a photo of him and his wife sitting with my father and my mother at a Union Club social event... wish I had it now. Just thought I would add this little bit of Info. John D.

I just came across this thread. It would be good to get a copy of the story written about Harry. Harry was my Grandfathers brother. I see that a few people have commented... family members. I have a couple of pictures of Harry that I came across when my Granda (Thomas) passed. Please let me know if you would like them.

Hi. My grandfather was James Owens. He had an older brother Henry and I presume your grandfather Thomas was a brother as well? Dan

hello, I can see I'm coming late to the party. I'm another distant relative. My grandfather Willie Docherty was a cousin and great friend of Henry. Their mothers were sisters. we used to have a photo of him wearing his belt. I met him once at a family party, he was very entertaining. if any other relatives want to share family info I would be interested in hearing more about their lives

Hi not sure if it any help but Harry Owens, also known as Jake Kilrain the boxer is my great uncle. I don’t fully understand how to work this website but I seen someone saying they were looking to find his family in Scotland I know the Owens in Baillieston. My gran would love to hear more about him if yous knew.

Tonight at home I went through few photos and old newspaper pages of Henry. I'm his great granddaughter (his daughter Norah is my grandma). The family roots are spreading wider, I'm Italian and I live in Italy with my family but it's always good and heart warming to think back where you come from.
