My grandfather 1875-1945 was a qualified Medical Practitioner (1900). I have discovered most of his career moves but am totally stuck for the period 1911 - 1918. He was in the 3rd Dundee Highlanders Volunteer Battalion, the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) as a Surgeon-Lieutenant w.e.f. 1903. He also worked in TB Sanatoria in Gloucestershire at least until 1911(as per Census) but ? what happened to him then. I know he was living in Braunton, Devon when he died. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat :)
He was still at the sanatorium in 1913
1913 Medical Register Alexander Kirk Traill
Sanatorium, Salterley Grange near Cheltenham.
I expect you have his marriages and divorce, a few mentions in the papers including a lovely wedding photo. In 1923 he was described as a medical practitioner of Braunton with Messrs, Wright and Traill.
Still missing his wartime years unfortunately.
Cathy :)

Thank you very much Cathy - that's another two years covered and I hadn't discovered that he was back in Braunton by 1923. Yes I have the marriage(s) and divorce articles. I really thought there would be a record somewhere covering his war time involvement. Thank you again and for responding so quickly.

Hi Cathy - you're brilliant. My son and I have been researching the Doc for a few weeks now and, in half an hour, you're finding things out that we hadn't come across.
Will I be able to access the complete article ?

Adding to Cathy's info above, Alexander was still showing at this address in 1915 and 1917 on the UK Medical Register.

A little confusion though...the divorce papers, that you have, show:
...The petitioner stated that his marriage to the respondent, Doris Eva Triall, took place at St. Stephens Church, Cheltenham, on September 23 1913, and since the marriage he had lived at Braunton. There was one child of the marriage, a girl born in 1914...

Yes it is a bit confusing. It just doesn't seem possible for him to be working at Salterley Grange sanatorium and in a GP practice in Braunton. But wonder how much he had to do at the Grange - no antibiotics then and the care mostly consisted of good diet, warmth and fresh air at that time. As a Volunteer in the black watch I felt he would be assigned to the eared fort somewhere. Thank you for your help 😀😀

Hi
The article is available on Findmypast though there is no more info about Alexander. Possibly some small mentions in the British Newspaper Archives? Not available free unfortunately.

Thank you for getting back. I will certainly try the sites you mention.. Thanks again😄😄

I don't know whether you have this, but if you Google North Devon Journal 1945 Dr Alexander Traill, it will take you to a few sites with journal entries. Looks like GenesReunited is the best one but I don't subscribe there so can't check.
-
You noted his service with The Black Watch in WWI. Have you checked out their comprehensive website which includes tracing a soldier? http://www.theblackwatch.co.uk/history-and-research/tracing-a-soldier/ (http://www.theblackwatch.co.uk/history-and-research/tracing-a-soldier/)

Thank you Nettie. I am looking at the website you mention but not finding anything as yet. I will keep looking though as his service must be recorded somewhere. He just seems to have disappeared for the duration of the war but as a surgeon and member of the volunteer Black Watch Volunteers surely he must have been put to good use. Thank you again 😄😄

Thank you again. I'm just so grateful for every crumb of information. Am annoyed that I lost longer post to you as I explained bigger picture. Will try to do that again tomorrow in post. sounds as though Alexander's widow continued to take part in BrAunton life after her husbands death in 45. Alexander was never married to my grandmother -part of the reason for the research !
-
My grandfather was Alexander Kirk Traill. He was GP in Braunton. His second wife was Barbara Sybil Godby, they married in 1923. Their daughter, my mother , Jean Barbara Gordon Traill, lives in Spain.
Are we family?
-
Dear Colin
Thank you for getting in touch. There is certainly a possibility that we have the same grandfather but its complicated. My fathers birth certificate does not identify his father but he was baptised ALEXANDER TRAILL Griffiths - GRIFFITHS being the name of my grand mother who was unmarried at the time. I was always told that my grandfather was a Doctor and having looked into things a bit, I can certainly place him and my grandmother in the same place before my father was born. all This was a long time ago (my father was born in 1918) and who can blame anyone for what happened during war time when every day might be your last. Perhaps that enough for now. Let me know if you need anything more.
