Title: HENRY SMITH 'Convict' - Co. Suffolk
Post by: JustMee on Monday 26 October 15 11:10 GMT (UK)
Hi, looking for any information possible regarding a convict 'Henry Smith' born about 1799, and believe he was from the Co. Suffolk area.  He was tried at Suffolk, Bury St Edmunds Assizes, July 1831 for house breaking.   He was sentenced to death - however this was changed to transportation to Australia.

I have the Australia side of information,  but nothing is known about his life in England.    It's believed that he may have been married in England . . . . but due to not knowing who his parents were, and what actual village he came from, it's been hard to track him in England.

There's an article in the Bury & Norwich Post 13/07/1831 of a Henry Smith being committed to gaol charged with stealing various articles from Mr William Meeking of Lavenham and his brother Mr Henry Meeking.

An earlier article in the Suffolk Chronicle gives his occupation as shoemaker.
