Hi,
I am researching this family. They come from Killinchy Wood, Killyleagh.
They had 9 children I believe and one, John, came to Australia in 1859.
I am interested in any history, but especially prior to this family.

Have you seen the death of a John Coulter of Killinchy Woods 9 Mar 1878,viewable on GRONI for £2, and his Will on PRONI which gives the names of a number of his children?
Ros Davies website also shows a Will for a John Coulter dated 20 Nov 1857.
Could either of these be you relative?

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
Fadge, that is my John Coulter. I do have a copy of the will. His son John came to Australia when he was very young. I do not have any information about this family before John and his wife Jane Morrow.
BallyaltikilliganG, thank you for all the work, but I am researching Coulter (or sometimes Cultra) not Coulson. Jane Morrow's father's name was Joseph, so that might be the one you found in the Tithe Applotment books.
I do not know how to research back from here.
Regards
Lynda

Hi, sorry about my reading Coulter wrongly, my brand new glasses or myself haven’t adapted yet.
going around in circles I went back to
the tithes

I went back to Ros Davies Co Down website and who lives in Australia, and eventually found
Andrew CULTRAGH . Killyleagh farmed over one acre so granted a spinning wheel premium & the right to grow flax in 1796 Irish Flax Growers list
John CULTRA . Killinchy married Jane Morrow 26 Oct 1829 at Killinchy Presbyterian Church PR
You are going to run out of resources at some time, so you need to keep an eye on church records if they exist . Ros Davies http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/CHURCHES/K_W.htm
gives surviving records for
1ST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, KILLYLEAGH in Plantation Street
Records available are from 1692; Killyleagh Library holds baptisms 1693-1757 then 1835-1882 & marriages 1692-1760 then 1833-1872; (personal visits only) North of Ireland FHS (www.nifhs.org) has baptisms 1835-1882 & marriages 1692 -1872; LDS Batch #700311 & M700311 The graveyard surrounds the church on about 2 acres; gravestone inscriptions available UHF Vol 7 . There are a few 18th century graves with oldest being 1754; email me Ros davies for a gravestone look-up .
2ND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH KILLYLEAGH in Cow Street
Records available- baptisms 1835-1881, marriages 1835- 1871, no graveyard
If you want to see a list of cousins remaining in your homestead area in 1911 see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Crossgar/Killinchy_Woods/
entries at 29 and 31 all the coulters are presbyterians
Ros Davies again just for just the entries for Coulter that mention Killinchy Wood{s} include
Miss Alice COULTER . Killyleagh a student at Killinchy Woods Primary School c. 1924; class photo available DR 2 /1/1936
Miss Bessie COULTER . Killyleagh a student at Killinchy Woods Primary School c. 1924; class photo available DR 2 /1/1936

next finding more about ‘Killinchy in the Woods’ also known as Killy in the Woods It’s a townland at the extreme west side of Killyleagh parish. Its also just above Crossgar in the civil parish of Killmore which might have more convenient churches etc Ros Davies gives more about it under her placename section eg great destitution 20 Mar 1847 [which might mean the Famine]: incendiarism 23 Feb 1850 {which might mean civil unrest]
using google maps and streetlevel, here is the starting corner of the townland Killinchy in the Woods’ running eastwards on both sides of this road, north to the left, south to the right https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.4144052,-5.7674221,3a,75y,90h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sVZMOyEj2BMrivaaPpXd7dg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
Griffiths valuation http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ has description details and maps , try to find the townland on their map. It gives all the field boundaries and blocks that are buildings BUT their particular map doesn’t have the valuation map references marked upon it. That’s going to slow down your research. You could write to Local history Library , South eastern Education and Library headquarters, Ballynahinch Co Down and ask them have they got a marked copy. if they have you could acguire acheap photocopy, your map references within the townland s are 1 to 5 /
Have run out of time
