I am looking for details on James montague Cole born 1812 in Kettering to James and Mary Cole. I need his mothers maiden name and any siblings. He was a farmer and married a kezia Gibbins. I can't find a birth record any where only a christening in 1830 in geddington when he was 18. Please help
-
His parents James and Mary are in Kettering in the 1841 census, both born 'out of county' so likely they were not married in Northants either
-
The birth record is the Christening you have found even if it was 18 years after he was born.
-
Have you discounted this marriage?
James COLES otp Kesiah BRAWN otp 1834 02-Feb at Raunds
No not the one- wrong James and Kezia. Funny there should be 2 couples though
-
Thank you everyone I will keep looking. Interesting about being out of parish though thanks
-
I have seen an 1861 census that suggests James M Cole Farmer 766 acres was born in 1793 and married to a Keziah aged 33 ( ie b1827/8)
Address Rothwell Kettering
-
I am just looking at that 1861 census - the age is not clear but does look more like 68 than 48
-
The 1871 census has them age 58 and 43
-
But j m Cole was born in 1812. Could that be his father and they were visiting?
-
JMC's baptism states father James was Wool Dealer.
JMC's funeral notice mentions he was " a leading member of the Weslyan Connexion"
In 1841 in Kettering, father James Snr is 70, a Wool Stapler.
Mary is 60.
HO107 / Piece: 803 / Book: 17 /Pg1
James Snr probably died 1842 (FreeBMD)
Looks like Mary here in 1851, maybe?:

The 1851 census clears this up a little
The address is the give away ( the 1861 transcription was correct as to what can be seen but is wrong in fact! ;D )
1851 Nunnery House James is said to be 35 ( b1816)
1861 Nunnery House - so the strong assumption must be an error in the age as it looks to be.
Added: Found the 1841 - Address - The Street named Nunnery West Rothwell Kettering
Interesting names - ( for me anyway) Srah and Jane Bradshwaw are living there - no indication of status
But an unnamed Partridge aged 60 is there. Partridge is also a family name that has links to Cole and Hine and Gibbins
-
From FreeBMD:
Selina Cole FISH died 1900, age 71, registered Kettering
Mary A F FISH died 1913 age 77, registered Kettering (she was Mary Ann Frances FISH)
Looks like Selina FISH was named after a COLE Aunt:
DEATH 1837:
Reported: Leicester Chronicle - Saturday 02 September 1837
Died, Sunday 20th after a few days' illness, Miss Selina COLE , third daughter of James COLE, Wool Stapler, Kettering.
So now there is issue of James & Mary:
Anne COLE b abt 1802
James Montague COLE b 1812
Selina COLE , died 1837
[Daughter] COLE

1851 census which David found in Nunnery House, Rothwell .
E. A. GIBBINS age 43 married sister of James is living/visiting, born Kettering
I cannot find a marriage in the index for Gibbins/Cole but there is this
Henry FISH of Brackley and Ann COLE otp married 7 Aug 1827 at Kettering.
So James has 2 sisters.
-
Found the Gibbins marriage now
William GIBBINS of Milton Earnest, Bedfordshire Cyana Alison COLE otp 1826 19-Jul at Kettering
-
Cyana was born ( possibly ) 1807
Selina is also intertwined in Gibbins/Cole family as Cyanna named a daughter born (1838-1841) after Selina Cole passed
-
So James has 2 sisters.
Three sisters:
Anne (married FISH)
Cyanna Alison (married GIBBINS)
Selina (died 1837) (death notice stated her to be third daughter)
Getting closer to Mary's ms, I feel....... ;D
Reported in The Jurist, and the London Gazette 1842, and various newspapers incl:
Leamington Spa Courier - Saturday 09 April 1842:
James COLE, Woolstapler, Dealer and Chapman of Kettering, Northamptonshire.
In May 1842, George Inn, Kettering : Fiat of Bankrupcy was awarded and issued against him & he was ordered to appear and disclose his full financial situation.
Seems rather ominous that he looks to have died so very soon after - per the Death registration of Jun Qtr 1842, Kettering.

Snap
James Cole married a Mary Bradshaw in Luton Bedford July 9 1795
This shows a relationship to the Bradshaws in the census in 1841 - assuming Mary and Jane can be linked as sisters
-
And in the 1851 census (I think) Mary gives her birthplace as Luton (transcribed as Suton)
-
I had a thought. Jane and Mary would more likely be sisters-in-law
Cant find a baptism for Sarah Bradshaw aged 16 living with James in 1841 ( and Jane )
-
You lot are absolutely amazing. It seems to be coming together. Need to find the connection to the Gibbins women kezia he married. I'm sure she was somehow related in the first place. In her dads ( Richard Gibbins) will James montague Cole gets it. But there is a plaintiff called Ann Jane or Jane Ann who contests it ..
-
Sarah,
I had a thought you have a thread on Kezia Gibbins but I will put the info here. Leicestershire Parish records are now available on FindMyPast and I found Kezias baptism in 1827. To Richard (grazier) and Mary.
If you have a sub take a look its a very neat entry. :D
