Dear Listers
I'm trying to find out more about a great Uncle who I posted about previously.
Thanks to other members support I have identified that he fought and died in WW1 but my father has uncovered that previously he was an inmate at the above orphanage according to the 1911 Census.
I believe his parents died in 1904 and 1906 but not sure when he was admitted or when he left the orphanage. I know he enlisted with the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1917 and died that year in action but trying to find out the missing pieces of the jigsaw.
We have some useful information from the Archives Dept at Plymouth but no other records can be found.
Any ideas would be welcomed!

Have you seen this website: -

wonder if it might be worth contacting them?

Plymouth City Council - Archives catalogue, definitely have some records on-line re: Devonport Royal Dockyard Orphanage, but perhaps older ones are not yet on-line.
Might be worth an enquiry:

Also when the Orphanage ceased to exist.Would the Land Registry be able to help?

If memory serves me right, there was a Royal Dockyard Orphanage at South Warne, Mary Tavy, in the 1950s.
I realise that this is later than your period of interest. It is quite possible that it was evacuated to there during Second World War.

thank you - I have checked the Plymouth and West Devon Record office and you are right upon outbreak of the Second World war the orphanage moved out of the city to Mary Tavy and their premises were purchased by Plymouth City Council and cnverted into 'guest houses for old people'. They have since been converted into private apartments. I wonder whether Plymouth City Council may hold any records before this as I've drawn a blank so far?

thank you...I know when George died but trying to find out when he was admitted to the orphanage and when he left..both his parents died in 1904 & 1906 and the 1911 census shows him living as a resident in the orphanage but we are trying to find out when he left there and joined up in the army
