Any guesses as to the time and date when we'll welcome the 20,000th?
cheers

My money's on Saturday 13th August at 4.05 pm, need we say GMT? I bet weekends are busier than during the week. I wonder if that Mr or Ms Unknown has any idea how many people are awaiting his/her arrival :D
Mary

If I could change me bet I would. But that's bad form.
As a scaredy cat at betting - I always hedge so as a secondary bet I think it will be 20th Aug now, based on the last week.
P
PS: they will be Aussies, like roast potato, & identify with Maggie Simpson as their Simpson's character.

It appears that I'm going to be proved wrong this week on the timing of the 20,000th Rootschatter unless by some miracle the site gets more than 120 new members per day for the next few days. With hindsight, I shouldn't have been surprised about losing my shirt since I was the only person more optimistic than Trystan and I failed to take into account the "Kids hogging the PC during the Summer Holidays" factor.
Even if it's for no other reason than to prove Annie right that the "boys" are falling over themselves on this one I attach a summary in chronological order of the bets placed so far, duly taking into account the effects of time zones. After much handwaving, odds have now been assigned to the various bets and by my calculations, Dimps is odds on favourite to win, closely followed by Jo New, Kevwood, Jaycon & MaryA.
Let wait and see if the bookies are going to make a killling or lose their shirts ???.
Al
ps Dimps, I should definitely start dusting off that proper hat of yours :)

Statistics............. ?
Oh puhleeze ::) ::)

With all these new members does the ratio of gents to ladies always remain constant at 1:1.4? Or is this statistic not updated?

How about "Statistics for Dummies" by Deborah Rumsey for your book club Annie? 8)

Not to worry Annie, I believe there is another version that does not have such high expectations of its readers as the edition I mentioned previously. Maybe more suitable for your needs? :P

Barnes and Noble says - so many people in Mexico have bought that book - that they have to do a reprint!! ::)
Couldn't you be a bit more specific, Annie? ??? What proportion of these sales were via the second hand market and, of these, what percentage would have been hardback?
Paul
PS
Great stats, Al... on this basis I'll have a fiver each on emily, duckcharm 1 and Indiapaleale, and place my own horse in the race: 5.45pm on 1 August 2005.

Do they have it as an Audio book ?- I'm not quite sure I can get through that DRY stuff!!
That way I can listen and tune out if I want to...... 8) while I'm posting replies on Roots :P

Well it appears that both Trystan, Paul E and I are out of the running. The conspiracy theorists among you may think that Friday's crash of Rootschat was due to Trystan running a routine on the server to automatically create 250 new Rootschatters and so win the bet but I personally am having none of this ;D
According to my screen, the number of members now sits at 19772 - up 261 since Lloydy's post of last Monday (one week ago give or take a few hours). Based on the rate of increase in Rootschatters over the last week, the men in Trilbies have once again waived their arms a lot and have come up the the following new odds:
So the new favourite is Liverpool Annie
Would this uncanny ability to predict the future have got her burned at the stake in a previous century? ;D
Al
-
You've missed your vocation, Al (unless bookmaker IS your vocation!!)! :)
As I raced home from a long weekend in Durham, I was confident I would have been able to collect on my 5.45pm bet. I blame server disruption for the shoddy failure to garner the extra 400 members that would have made a difference.
Even my attempt at a late bit of publicity in Your Family Tree magazine didn't come in time! Maybe I should have sent the press release to Practical Family History Website Design as well...
cheers (licking his wounds)

What are you trying to say Al Crighton ?
My boss calls me "Princess" though he probably does mean "Witch"

;D ;D
Boo-hoo :'( :'( :'( :'( only just found this thread - is it REALLY too late to bet ??
As I'm hopeless at winning anything (except arguments) I would have pulled 12 August at 10.30am out of the hat.
::) ::) ::)
-
Hi Mobo
No wonder you're hopeless at winning anything... :)
We are now only 95 Rootschatters away from 20,000.
Currently, we're getting around 50 new registrations per day.
Looks like Al's right, the money has to be on Liverpool Annie with this one - although a miraculous late spurt today might just let someone claim 5/1 on Bee.
Its not impossible - on 10 June 2005, there were 180 new members registered!
Now, if we all invited just one more friend to join today... :)
cheers

Could be sometime tomorrow and I think it's going to be a nailbiter. The reason is as follows (goes into Peter Snow General Election mode):
Bee predicted 17:00 hrs BST today and although this hour has now passed, she could still win since our favourite, Annie's time does not come up for another 2 and a half days or so (08:30 hrs on 7th August).
This means that if the 20,000 mark is reached before 00:45 hrs BST on 6th August, Bee's time would be the closest. After this time however, Annie would win, provided that the 20,000 mark is reached before 17:15 hrs on 8th August (half way between Annie's time and Kev's) ;).
Extrapolating from the numbers in the last 2 posts from Lloydy, 112 members in the last 51 hours and 23 minutes means that it should take another 30.74 hours to reach 20,000 taking us to around 5am on 6th - only around 4 hours after the crucial 00:45 decider time :D
Watch this space! ;D

Here goes.....
By about the time you go bed tomorrow (assuming you're not out on an all night bender), if there are still less than 20,000 members then you'll have won the bet. ::)

Basically, Annie, Al is using a very simplified version of Coutts' Rules of Bookmaking. The detailed account suggests that the transverse bet takes precedence over all others that are made PRIOR to the 'obvious' one, so that the favourite becomes the second favourite, and so on, until you reach the end of the field. This is only nullified when the 'axis' bet is laid off.
Thought everyone knew that!
Paul :)

43 new member in the last 24 hours, at this rate Sunday is looking the Red hot favorite.

I think it will be sometime on Saturday. Annie could still win, as she may be the nearest.
I'll be offline for a week from tomorrow AM so I'll miss the grand welcoming. Lets hope its someone who is really interested in participating and doesn't become one of the ghost members! :)

Using Crighton's Law of Rootschat Extrapolation (1883)...
Since 1 August we have been recruiting at the rate of one member every 33 minutes.
If all carries on in a similar vein (and my guerilla tactics on another board this AM doesn't inflate the count!), then I reckon we would expect to welcome our 20,000th member at around 5pm on 6 August (BST).
cheers
Paul
-
Nearly right Paul,
You didn't read Appendix 2 of the paper where it clearly states that the number of Rootschat members (Rt) at any point in time (tR) is defined by:
Rt = R0 Kx (tR - t0)
unless a Friday night is involved in which case the formula becomes:
Rt = R0 Kx (tR - t0) + Ns PR1
Where Ns is the number of people who will sit in front of their computer on Friday night because they don't feel like going down the pub and PR1 is the probability that they will join Rootschat.
Al ;)
-
Plus my attempt to seduce members from other boards (which shall remain nameless) may edge it much nearer!
Nice one Al!
cheers

Think we may need to build in the BBq factor, as it is a wonderful sunny evening here. ;D

Am I too late for the curry night? I'd love to pop over for one ;)
Looks like I'll be out of the running to win, Rootschat is doing so well!!!!
I think Al swallowed a maths book, wonder if he really knows what he's talking about though, or just trying to blind us all with .... was going to say science, but maybe rubbish is more to the point. ;D ;D ;D

The critical 00:45 BST time has now been passed which means that Bee can now longer win the bet :'(
Annie looks as though she's sitting pretty but if we don't get those 32 additional members by 5:15pm on Monday, the mantle will pass to Kev Wood.
Think you're pretty safe Annie ;)
Al
-
I think its time to congratulate Annie (in advance, of course) for undue prescience!
This bet has 'cert' written right through it. As Bill Blunt once said, "Its a brave man who accuses Bill Blunt of second guessing the future, but when it comes to predicting the advent of Rootschat's 20,000th member, few would bet against Liverpool Annie's prediction".
I think Annie should be assigned as mentor to whoever is lucky enough to walk through the door of 'Hotel Roots' tomorrow... :)
cheers

Congratulations Annie, just shows what the fellas know about placing bets ::)
So what time will we get the 30000 member.

Sorry Bee!
I'm not usually a very good Bettor -
when I go to the dogs I usually bet on the last one to pee - thats the one that runs faster!!! :P :P
Couldn't do that in this case case though - so I took a pen and stuck it in the calendar!! :P
Pretty good huh? ::)

sticking a pin in it is probably the best way, I was lazy, I just chose my birthday and approx birth time.
the only other time I bet (not with money) is watching horse racing on the telly, if the horse is a grey......I chose it. :)

How will we know who they are?
I bet I'm not logged on when it happens :(

PS: well done Annie - if I had seen the string earlier I would have guessed 15/8 - so shows it's best not to ask me for any betting tips - but then I'm a good girl me, so I obviously know nothing about betting :-[ ;D

As an absolutely brand new member I couldn't help read through this thread,
Damn, missed 20000 by [] "that much"! turned out Member # 19973.
Needless to say the first thread (this one) I've read has been very entertaining! Since its SOOO close to the mark I will not venture a guess, but I'm going to keep my eye on it just to find out who it'll be! Besides, I have a lot of time invested in this thread now... can't just leave it until its finished!
With that said, I'll say a big "Howdy" to all and look forward to getting to know you all better, from what I've read so far, It appears this'll be an "Interesting" board to get to know :D!
Cheers!

Hi Julie
Here's how ...
You probably already know there's a running total of membership numbers on the top of this page :
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php
Page down to the bottom and you'll see a section saying "Rootschatters Online"
At the end of the section is [Rootschat Stats]
Or you could click here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=stats
(The top right box has 'Latest Rootschatter')
The top left box has the membership numbers which, if you click on it will give you the membership list...
Click on the the 'Date Registered' Column until its showing in order of latest member.
Pour yourself a nice drink and congratulate yourself.
:)
cheers
Paul

Boy! - you learn something everyday don't you?
I understood that Paul ...... ::)
what a concept - me understanding Paul!
Annie
-
Hi Annie
I'm happy to de-untechnicalise my explanation if you want! :)
NOW FOR THE TOUGH PART OF THIS THREAD....
We're pretty much on track with the time / date of the 20,000th member... but
What will they be called?
cheers
Paul
-
I'm expecting a certain cheeky Rooter (is that a name of a Rootschatter or should we stick with "chatter"?) may sit online waiting waiting waiting and the 20,000th will possibly be a Bill Blunt??
P ;D
-
Wouldn't it be brilliant (if a little unlikely) if at the moment that member 19,999 was recruited, about 200 folk all tried to join simultaneously??
We could of course start a CALLING ALL GUESTS thread on each of the main boards, alerting them to the welcome they will get if they are member 20,000!
cheers

Annie ;) ;)
-
A special welcome to 'the old trout' too who I believe was 2nd runner up!
I notice Celia's (the old trout) first post was to repond to a request on the Yorkshire East Riding Board - how kind and a welcome addition to Rootschat !!!
Jonathan :)
-
Wicked Bob.
Keith - obviously on the same wave length as I.
Anne - a BIT early for you ;D but it's not everyday
And to Trystan & Sarah LONG LIVE ROOTSCHAT
-
Well as official bookmaker on Paul's thread, I can now confirm that there will be no steward's enquiry and that Annie is officially the winner.
Just off to count out her greasy pound notes - Annie's winnings should be sufficient for a medium sized bag of eye of newt and a small tin of polish for her broomstick ;D ;)
Al
-
Well obviously it's a big welcome to Grinner and an equally big congratulations to Annie...........so what happens next? ??? Do we have to go back to digging up dead rellies? ::) ;D :D
Bee
-
Watch what you say Mr. C. - or I'll stick a Dementor on the demented!!! :P
Thanks Bee Wendi and Mary - lets do lunch!! ;)
By the way Wendi - after all this today - I have to be 2nd after Jonathan!! ::)

I knew I would miss it :(
I love my kids and my husband, but did they have to want to be fed and entertained tonight??
Welcome Grinner and all the othernewcomers who joined tonight ;D. I am a fairly recent addition to the site myself, but I love it...everyone is really friendly and unbelievably helpful. I hope you have as much fun and success as I have :D
Regards
Julie :)

Well Done Annie ;D
A huge welcome to "Grinner" our 20,000th member and also Old Trout and Techsavant.
Sarah ;D ;D
-
I missed it all!!!! I've been offline since Sunday with Broadband problems >:( >:( Happy to say that all is OK now, thank goodness. I've been lost without my daily fix of Rootschat.
Well done to Grinner - member 20,000 ;)
Jan

I notice that Grinner still hasn't posted anything ??? All that excitement and he's not been back since his 2 minutes and 4 seconds on-line after he joined up. Has anyone sent him a PM to congratulate him or did we scare him off with all the fanfare? ;)
Al
ps I assume Grinner is a "He"
-
I sent him a PM inviting him to look at this thread, at the time he was on air.
That must have scared him/her off!
Keith
-
I think "Grinner" was a ringer!! :P
But thats OK ! - how many do we have now ? whats the next number we have to go for Mr StatMan? ::) Are we taking bets??
Annie :P
PS A few of us sent him Congratulations - MaryA started a new thread!!
PPS Can we change the colours this time Al ??
-
whats the next number we have to go for Mr StatMan? ::) Are we taking bets??
Annie :P
I guess it has to be 30,000 ??? Yeah I'll start taking bets ;D
PPS Can we change the colours this time Al ??
I quite liked the colours last time. If they're too bright for you Annie, can I suggest dark glasses or taking more water with it to avoid the hangover ;)
Al
-
OK Big Al ..............!!
Lets make it 25,000 - it'll go quicker!!
I like short term gratification - I hate waiting!!
These days I don't get hangovers - 'cos I don't drink!! -
I just freeze it and eat it :P
Annie
PS - Don't you think the other colours were kind of "girly looking"? :o
-
Lets make it 25,000 - it'll go quicker!!
How about making it 10,000 Rootschatters who've actually posted. It's a sad fact that almost 11,000 of the 20,000 registered Rootschatters have, like Grinner, never actually posted on a board :o
PS - Don't you think the other colours were kind of "girly looking"? :o
If the colours weren't macho enough for you we can make them Khaki and Brown next time so that you'll feel at home by pretending you're at the GWF ;)
Anyway, whats all the fuss? I thought you said you didn't want any more statistics :P
Al
-
You're right - you're right !!
I got caught up in the thrill of victory......... :P
Plus fatigues don't suit me!!
-
I hadn't realised that over half those 20,000-plus members have never posted on here. I wonder what they get up to - maybe it's a bit like window-shopping. I also wonder what the maximum recorded number of Rootschatters on line at any one time has been. Can anyone tell me that?...
Keith

Here you are Keith.....

Incredible, Jan!
Though I have no idea how you came by this statistic - must admit that I've not read all of this thread yet...

Keith
Go to the Rootschat Homepage, scroll down to the bottom where it shows who's online and under all the names you will see [Rootschat Stats]. Click on that and you will find all the information in there ;)
Jan
-
Thanks for that, Jan,
I'll now have a little play with the Stats to see what other amazing data it holds...

OK after my dismal showing in the last guessing game how about we take shots at 25000 members. I am for 25th Dec 2005
Rob
-
Seeing as Rob has set the ball rolling, I'll go for December 31st 2005 (I've picked my anniversary so I wont forget).
I've just had a look at the stats and we're upto 20303 already! :o
Bee
-
OK then, I'll join in too!!!
I will pick 24th November 2005 (that's my birthday so there's no way I will forget my bet!!!)
Jan ;)
