Another miller I'm looking at is John Cole. He worked the windmill in Aldringham from 1829 until about 1835. The mill, which was later moved to Thorpeness, was built in 1824. I'd be interested in anything that links John with Aldringham pre-1829 or post 1835; especially if it links him to the business of milling.
Cheers,
Windy

Over the years I've managed to push John Cole's occupation back 10 years to when he apparently married either:-
Mary Ann Merrells of Leiston (1819/11/02) Ipswich Records Office
or
Julia Nunn (Ancestery.com)
seems Julia was the brides as he had several children with her until 1833.
Does anyone know anything about Julia Nunn (the Nunn's were a prominent milling family) and it would be nice to see that connection?
Cheers,
Windy
Or how Mary Ann Merrells got attached to John's name (may be there were two John Coles in Aldringham at the time!)

witnesses to the marriage were Hannah Cole, Jane Cole and Hammond Smith who was the parish clerk. All signed.
There's a marriage in Aldringham 29 Oct 1838 of Hannah Fisher, widow, innkeeper, father John Cole, farmer to John Salter, gardener, father Isaac Salter, servant. Witnesses James Cole & Harriet Cole.
Possible 1841 census for James & Harriet

Thanks Osprey. These are a little later than where my interest lies, as John Cole had ceased milling by 1835. But may add some further colour.

pretty sure that Hannah & James were John's siblings and the John next door was your John's father.

Windy,
As ever, good to hear from you.
Couple of newspaper items that have come on line since you posted that confirm Keziah2's find of John' death in 1835. Also an early 1829 mention of John -
You probably have these but, just in case
1. Suffolk Chronicle, 25 Jul 1829
2. Bury and Norwich Post, 14 Jan 1835

Thanks everyone. Yes, got the clippings. The interesting thing here is that this means there was an earlier mill at Aldringham (other than the mill that was later moved to Thoprness).
I'll need to do some more investigating! :)

Trying to fit in a bit more Suffolk windmill research now that I've retired. Though as most people say "I'm busier now than when I was working for money" :D

Retirement - it's a must to have a reason to get up in the morning. But being in a position to ignore it is even better.
