Title: Dating please for mother and child
Post by: teddy24 on Saturday 03 October 15 05:03 BST (UK)
Hi,
this photo of woman and child, presumably the mother, has been scanned for me and we are hoping it is a shared relative.

Would be very grateful if it could be dated please.

What size is the original?
Was original on card?
Was there a photographers name on back or front?
Were the corners of photo round or square?
All these items help with dating.

Hi,
Thanks for reply. I understand your questions and will ask the person who gave me the scan. Unfortunately I may not be able to answer all of them as the photos have been professionally framed and sealed, I can't ask her to take them out for my sake!

In similar circumstances some of the rootschat members who are expert in clothing styles have been very accurate, hope you're looking at this Jim1.... ;)

I'll come back with the photographer info or more at least about the size etc as soon as I can obtain info

My guess would be 1880s...do you know who they might be?

Hi Carol,

I have been told the circumstances around how the photo was obtained, from a descendant of my maternal 2nd Gt Grandmother so I am hoping it is her, though if the young child with her is her youngest daughter (born 1865) then I would have expected it would be early 1870s...
Hmmm hope to find out more to pass on...

Ok my distant cousin relative came back and said that she doesn't have originals of the photos, she has framed copies which she has scanned to me, so we won't be able to get photographer details but they were not from a round photo apparently.

Looks like the clothing style will have to be the nearest way to judge...

1870's but later in the decade.
This style arrived late 1870's & crossed over into the very early 80's.
So 1877-82 I would suggest.
The girl would have been born early-mid 1870's.

Thanks Jim....we will have to now try to work out from this, the dating rules out the child being who I thought it may be especially but there are other possibilities will have to see what we can piece together...

I'm sticking with 1880s as I have one similar dated by Jim.
