"THOMAS STEWART" in block letters = top line
?? 2nd. line ( could be "Midlothian" where he was born) But it may be something else & could be crucial information.....

Hi, I think it's 183- (possibly 1835) - 1920. Would that be year of birth you have.

I agree with 1835 - 1920.
(Slightly easier to see with the image converted to negative.)

I have played with it further and am now getting 1835 - 1920. So now in agreement with Justoneed and Bookbox.
