Hi all,
An ancestor of mine, Edward Mortimore appears twice in a poll book for Bristol in 1754 (St James Parish). I am confident that they are the same person and he is first listed as a clothier and separately listed as a mayor's officer, the latter a position I am have not come across before and know little else. I'd grateful for any suggestions.

The Mayor’s Officer and Sergeant of the Mace, (Known also as the Sergeant at Arms) carries the mace on his right shoulder. He walks in front of the Mayor. No-one (except a member of the Royal family) must come between the mace and the Mayor. This goes back to the old days of protection.

That was quick, thank you very much.

Some towns, cities, and Counties will still follow that protocol to this day.

I think that in some areas they're termed "Mayor's Attendant", performing similar duties.
