Thanks Ray for the date. It was from a piece of paper saved from a fire, there are burn marks all over it & a nice big ashy smudge at the end of that date. The fire i believe was out at st breward.
I think my grandad mostly wants to just know more information about the people, where they are buried, what they did etc.
I do have a possible mystery though. Searching ancestry I've found a Thomas gill as a possible parent instead of one of the William/William John's.
After my morning coffee I'm off to my parents where the big paper is & going through & checking against any birth certificate I can find as the rest of the family is correct, dates included!, which is what has me confused.
-
It sounds as if you're planning a visit over to England to visit places with family connections. May it be an idea to try posting some request(s) on the appropriate county board? Just a thought, I looked at this because I've got a few Gills ( that sounds funny, but you know what I mean)- but the only Gills I've got are Cumberland, and yours sound West Country. Good luck with your search.

I'm in Cornwall, visited many of their graves.
My conflicting info is the parents of William John gill
Born 9-5-1864 or October 1864
Died 29-5-1932 in bodmin, Cornwall
He married Lizzie Jane Phillips
Born 17-4-1963 or 1965
Died 13-5-1927 in bodmin, Cornwall
They married 29-9-1881 or July 1881 in bodmin, Cornwall.
I'm struggling to find a birth record for William to find his parents & solve this confusion.
They were mariners & travelled, there are living relatives in USA that we know of.

Hi
This marriage record on FreeReg on the following link, gives the name of William John Gill's father as William.
http://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5510dfa5e9379002710ae462?search_id=5603e9b6f4040b058a000121
-
And this marriage record on FreeReg looks like the one for William John Gill's mum and dad and gives his mum's name as Jane Moorman

You're good, any ideas why when I click the link it just takes me to the search page rather than the record you've found.

No sorry I get the full link ??? Do you need further details to find them from the search page?

Have you got the marriage of John 1805 and Mary?
Freebmd has a possibility
John Gill bac abode St Teath married Mary Brown Richards sp abode St Endelion at St Endelion on 7 July 1832.
-
Hi
No I don't have John & Mary's wedding.
John was born in poughill baptised on 3-7-1806
I'm unsure on all of John & Mary's children. I have a Richard, Ann, Mary, & Betsy who are potentially theirs. Can anyone confirm this.
-
1851 census has John and Mary with children William, John and Frank.
1861 census they have Betsy Smith married daughter with them
1871 is confusing, John is down as grandfather, with Jane as wife and William as son. But I think it must mean the household is Jane (wife of John's son William) and their William and Jane's son William (1864) who is John's grandson. William snr possibly away at sea on census night.
I can't see a Richard anywhere apart from with another John and Mary in St Austell
-
Betsy I've got born 1833 lanteglos
Mary born 1836 lanteglos
Ann born 1838 lanteglos
Richard born 1839 lanteglos
So I'm assuming most are married & left the house by the time of the cencus
-
Cornwall OPC site has the baptism of a Betsy Gill in St Teath to John and mary on 1 1833, abode Marows in Lanteglos, his occ Farmer
Or they could have died young. Richard would only be 12 in 1851 a bit young to leave home but he could have been staying with rellies. I haven't found the family in 1841
-
We've also find Betsy living with them in 1861 married as Betsy Smith so I'd say she's correct.
-
St Teath
Ann bapt 15 Apr 1837
Richard 1 Jan 1839
Willam 17 Sep 1840
on William's baptism it gives mother's name as Mary Brown, i.e Brown is her middle name, so confirms the marriage I found to Mary Brown Richards and could mean her mother's maiden name was Brown.
haven't found mary yet, but there is a gap for her to fit in. maybe mistranscribed.

William isn't that old according to what I have, he's 1842/43 going from census records

Going back to Fanny Gill 1880-1917 for a moment
Free BMD
Deaths 1917
Q1
Fanny Gill
St Columb (Reg District for St. Breock)
Age 55
V: 5C P: 132
This means that this Fanny would have been born around 1862, however, I couldn't find a recorded registration of birth for a Fanny/Frances Gill in Cornwall around 1880. Also when I took another look at the 1881 Census it has Fanny as a son not daughter - thought this was just a simple error! Until I looked at the 1891 Census. There is no Fanny with the family but there is a Frank B: 1880, Port Isaac. There is also an additional daughter Annie B: 1882.

of the merchant seaman's records gives William's birth year as 1841 and it would be calculated from recorded age. He would have been born after civil registration started, so if you have his birth cert it would confirm
Betsy Gill married Richard Smith at St John (don't know where that is but both gave St John as abode) on 21 Aug 1856. record on Cornwall opc. Richard was a seaman. Record confirms her father is John. One of the witnesses was a Catherine Smith
-
1881 census has Fanny as a son, the female Fanny Gill death may be her married name.
-
1861 census has a Fanny B Gill a few months old, daughter of Rebecca Gill. There are lots of other children and a lodger called Thomas Bunt. I did see some St Teath baptisms for some children with Bunt as middle name, so it looks as though he was recognised as the father of some of them.
The census says she is unmaried, but when Rebecca and Thomas married later in 1861 she was a widow, her father had different surname so likely to be right.
Rebecca could be widow of a sibling of one of the people we're looking at. Her maiden name was Chilcott.
-
Some additional info on Frank Gill B: 1879 D: 1962 Bath - he is a Coachman in Bath, Somerset in 1901 and 1911 Census.
He marries Anstise Kate Norton (B: 17 Feb 1882 Topsham D: Q1 1976 Bath) on 20 Jan 1908 in Topsham, Devon. Her father's name is John Norton.
They have a daughter Kathleen who is 9 months old B: Bath in the 1911 Census.

-
burial for Richard Gill of St Endelion at St Teath on 26 Oct 1851 age 81. could be your first Richard. He is on 1851 census visiting the Brown family. Mrs Brown is called Betsy and born in Poughill about 1813, could she actually be his daughter?
His place of birth looks like Advent.
-
on a roll now!
Richard Gill baptised in Advent on 17 Aug 1770, s/o John and Elizabeth.
on Cornwall opc site transcribed from BTs
Two earlier children come up for same couple, they called them John(1765) and Elizabeth (1768). Why were our ancestors so unoriginal with names?
Likely marriage is John Gill and Elizabeth Smart in Advent on 6 sep 1763. no further information about them unfortunately
-
Now a long shot. A john Gill was buried in St Teath on 25 Nov 1817 age 79. This would make birth year around 1738, not unreasonable to have married in 1763 (age 25).
Was he widowed and went to St Teath to live with one of his children?
-
Just looking for more info on these few. I don't think the st teath ones are down this line. Also I believe fanny is male just people assume it's a female.
