William Elmer Long, my husband's great great uncle, emigrated to New Zealand at the beginning of the 20th Century. He and his wife Sophia Elizabeth lived in Auckland. He was buried in Otahuhu cemetary in 1931. His wife died in 1972. I know he had one son Robert Joseph Elmer Long but know nothing else about his life or descendants in New Zealand. Has anyone any information that they could share?

This must be the same man, the right age and death date. We had no idea that this had happened to him. A sad way for a life to end. He lived in Lambeth in London before he emigrated and a poultry farmer seems to be the last thing he would have become. I hope to discover more about him and his family.
Thank you for your reply.

Hello,
If you wish, I can do a newspaper death notice look up for Sophia Elizabeth.
This may give a clue as to the whereabouts of the son at that time.......
Minniehaha.
-
Thanks for all of the information, a look up for Sophia Elizabeth would be very helpful. The probate, will and inquest records all seem to have to be viewed on site in Auckland, I am not sure if they send copies out by email.
William was born in 1870 in London, I have not yet found out wether he was married before he arrived in New Zealand or afterwards, not for lack of hunting through Ancestry etc.!
-
Hi Lynn,
I hope to be able to do that newspaper look up tomorrow.......

it would be interesting to know what information was supplied at the registration of the death of William Elmer re his marriage.
At this time (1931), these were the questions asked:
Marriage Details
Where married
At what age married
Children
If living issue, the number, age and sex
To whom married.
If ordering from NZ BMD it is best to request a printout, as this may contain more information and is cheaper than a certificate. Can also be e-mailed to you.

Hi Minniehaha,
The Hillsborough Cemetery Record Books are held at the Auckland City Archives which are in the basement of the Auckland City Library the books are a wealth of information
"Series contains registers of information about people buried in Hillsborough cemetery, which show date of warrant, number, name of deceased, occupation, residence, date of death, cause of death, where deceased last came from, denomination, age in years, native place, years in province, date of burial, where buried (area, block, lot), name of officiating clergyman, name of informant, and remarks."
A search of the 1931 book may yield more information
Cheers Janette

Hi Janette,
I will put that on my next library visit 'to do' list. :)

I have now discovered that William Elmer Long was a steward on the vessel Ophir in 1901 (English census records). He served as a steward, at the time the vessel was being used as a Royal Yacht.
I notice that in the newspaper report it stated that he had been a steward on a New Zealand shipping line before he retired, so he kept his occupation.
Still cannot find marriage in either country, or any trace of Patricia! I also cannot find his emigration record, perhaps he jumped ship!
On the census it states that he was single at the time. So marriage should be between 1901 and 1913 I think.

Hello Hollyhenry, welcome to Rootschat. :)
It is one of the rules of Rootschat that we cannot name people on the forum who are living. If your father is still alive you will have to modify your message and delete his name.
After three posts you can however send personal messages. This will allow you to name living people.
Hope this helps......

Hi,
I have a photograph of Robert Joseph Elmer when he was about 10 years old. His aunt, Sarah Long, was my husbands Great Grandmother. Robert and Sarah's mother and father both came from Norfolk. I have been trying to find out more about the NZ branch of the family and have some information regarding William Elmer Long, but I cannot find when he married Sophia. It must have taken place in England but no luck so far. Also Robert had a sister called Patricia, again I have no information about her at all, I have the same problem with Edith, Robert's sister.
Have you any information you could share?
Lynn
