Trying to learn more on the ancestry of Allan MacDonald (probably born before 1780) on North Uist - his father may have been John MacDonald. Allan married Mary MacLean. Their eldest known child was Norman Macdonald born abt 1799. Other children were Mary (1800), Catherine ( ?), James Edward ( ? ), Susan (? ), John W. (1808).
The family emigrated to Nova Scotia around 1822 and settled in a rural area known as Stewartdale, Inverness county. Allan died in 1843 and Mary in 1855.
Allan had a relative, perhaps a brother, Donald who left Uist and settled at Red Head, Baddeck, Nova Scotia. He was grandfather to Rev. J. D. Nelson MacDonald.
I would be very interested to learn more origins of this North Uist family.

You might find the information you require on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
It is low cost pay to view. North Uist can be found under Inverness County.

I believe your Allan from Uist is Allan of Gerinish MacDonald.
A potted history of settlement is provided here, under the heading: THE MacDONALDS OF STEWARTSHIDALE
