Title: WRIGHT family Northumberland and Durham area
Post by: squirejay on Monday 14 September 15 19:43 BST (UK)
John Ebenezer WRIGHT born in South Shields around 1859 - 1861, subject to variation as on the marriage certificate in 1879 his age is given as 20 years, spouse is Emily Scott also 20 years approx. Believe they both lied about their ages as their families may not have approved of the marriage. neither set of parents appear to have attended the wedding and one of the witnesses was a niece!

John Ebenezer was the son of Peter Wright, b 1832 and Jane Gowland b 1834 in Newcastle upon Tyne, who also had the following other children:
Charles              b 1855
Peter                  b 1856
Elizabeth Ann      b 1859
Robert Gowland  b 1865
Emily Margaret   b 1870
Jesse Sophia      b 1873

Hi, not sure what you are wanting to find out.

Are you wanting to go forward from John Ebeneezer or back?

If they were going to lie about their ages they should have said 21, as under 21 they would need their parents consent. However marriages of minors, i.e. under 21, without consent after banns were valid, unless the banns had been forbidden by parents or guardians openly and publicly in church at the time of publication.

Hi,My g.g. grandfather was Ebenezar Wright b.1829 Cumberland and brother of Peter Wright.  Ebenezar was a stone mason and I have him in Lewis, West Virginia, USA in 1870, without his family.  I have no trace of him after this but perhaps your John Ebenezar went to join him in the States.  Also Robert Gowland Wright, the son of Peter*brother to John Ebenezer, emigrated to Adelaide, Australia,so there could be a connection there.  One of Roberts sons was named John Ebenezer b.1908.  Regards Patren
