I am looking for any information relating to the Hill Family of Bridgewater, Somerset. In particular to my Great Grandfather Sydney Hill whom was bortwon approx 1860s and whose Father George Hill was a Grand Mariner and whose Mother Maria Farris also were local to the area. Maria Hill, originally Farris died we believe in 1908 in Wellington, Somerset. Sydney was an Marine Engineer and we believe that he may have remarried an Ada Hodge and lived in Lower Enmore, Bridgewater before his death in 1947. However we are still trying to confirm that we are on the right track with all our research and would love to hear from anyone whom feels that they may be related to us in someway and that there ancestors also come from the Bridgewater, Somerset area.

George Hill, 49, mariner
Maria 31, James & Robert both 18, Henry 11,
Sydney 8, Emma 5, Sarah Hill 79 mother all born Somerset

Yes evidence seems to be showing us this would indeed be the one and same Family.

The marriage certificate would confirm that his father was George and should show his occupation.

Yes this is the third or fourth particular Sydney Hill that we believe is our Sydney Hill and therefore our Great Grandfather. It makes it difficult to be 100% sure however, as Sydney is such a common name and we believe bigamy was involved regarding Sydney and his marriages. It only makes it more intresting and intriguing that my Grandfather would never talk of his Father. Must have been an heck of a good reason.

It may be better if you tell us what information you are after on this family rather than us spending time looking for what you already have.
ADDED Where is Sydney living in 1911 or census after he married. If he is away from his family (wife/children) who are they and where are they living

Well in the 1911 Census, he is listed living with his Wife Mary and there children, including my Grandfather Leslie George Hill. Apparantly Marys Sister and Family are also living there and as Marys Sister continued to live there until her death during the middle of the Century, then we assume it was she whom owned house. They lived at Wenlock Road, Handsworth. However its possible Sydney wasnt really living with them as he was an Marine Enginneer and thus spent much time away at work working. Sydney is last mentioned on his Son Cyrils Death Certificate, when his name is mentioned as being an Steamship Engineer and being away at Sea. This was in Sept 1923.Mary Hill, Sydneys Wife and my Great Grandmother remarried in June 1928 to an Joseph Beedman and on the Marriage Cert, she lists herself as a Widow. So we assumed for a long time that Sydney must have died sometime between Sept 1923 and June 1928. However we think its possible he may have walked out on his Family and thus some bigamy could be involved. On Sydneys Marriage Cert to Mary in 1908 in Southampton, he lists his age as 41 years old, but this doesent seem to fit and the only Birth Cert that we have found that could possibly his is actually from 1863 when he was born in Bridgewater. Mary Haines was much younger, so could explain why he lied about his age on the Wedding Cert. Have found three Sydney Hills which thought any could possibly be my Great Grandfather. One died in Bristol in 1926 and whose Wifes name was Caroline, another died in Barnstable in 1926 and whose Obit notice that I have. Dont believe that its either and the newest Sydney whom actually lived until 1947 and died in Enmoor, Bridgwatwr and hes the Sydney that Im showing great intrest in now. Also rather jntreating that he married Ada in 1937 at such elderly age too!

It is also quite likely that they rented the property, life time lettings were common at these times.

When Sydney married Mary what information was on the marriage certificate about his
age / occupation /address and the name & occupation of his father. Who were the witnesses.

20 Richmond Street, doesnt list City however. George Hill Deceased listed as Father and Occupation was Grand Mariner. Sydneys Occupatiin listed as Marine Engineer. Witness at Wedding at Registrars Office in Southampton were James and Dorothy Cottam and also listed is Susan Haines, Marys Mother. Hope this helps.

Also as a sidenote, I have a postcard showing Edith Cavill the British Nurse being shot by the Germans during WW1 and written on the back is the word Syd and the date March 4th 1914. Which is very strange that someone would date a postcard to an event which happened several years later. I wonder why this specific date was so important. Always wondered that and if there was an xonnection to Edith Cavill?

Richmond Street is in Southampton, number 20 appears to be a private residence in the last census.
George Hill and his occupation certainly matches the census with Sydney age 8. 'Grand' Mariner sounds like a bottle of liqueur ;D I have not seen that description before, it is normally just Mariner.
If it was me I would be buying the marriage certificate to Ada just so that I could hopefully confirm / eliminate him from the death you have found in 1947
