Title: LANE, Liverpool, from 1891 onwards

Full info from 1901 census but would love to know how/when my ancestor moved from Wlitshire - some time between 1891 and 1901.

Yes, William Alfred Lane is my great-grandfather.  The link you gave ShaunJ was to my ancestry tree.

Born in 1872, in 1881 William Alfred Lane was in the Devizes Workhouse with his mother and brothers.

He was lost in 1891 until I found him (I believe) working as a labourer in Newport - seems most likely and I can't find him anywhere else.

In 1895, he married in Liverpool and in the 1901 census he is living in Kirkdale, Liverpool with his wife Mira and three children, including my grandfather, William Arthur Lane.  He ended up working as a drayman for a brewery - this makes sense given his agricultural roots in Wiltshire.

I would love to be able to fill the gap 1891 (Newport) to 1895 (Liverpool) if anyone has any ideas/tips.

It can be difficult sometimes to work out why people moved from one place to another. It's usually a case of trying to read between the lines. I had the same with my great grandmother. She moved from Woodplumpton all the way to Bretherton with her young family when she was widowed quite young, took me awhile to realise but when I tracked all her brothers and sisters I found her brother living in Bretherton on the census before so I assume she had followed her brother.
Tracking siblings,aunts,uncles,cousins on William and Mira's side of the family may give a few clues or it may be a case of he moved to Liverpool looking for work,met Mira and settled there with his young family. We can only read between the lines:)

Just noting that on census night 1901 there were around 3,000 people from Wiltshire living in Lancashire, of which 115 were from Devizes. It's not an unusual circumstance.

Interesting fact Shaun about the Wiltshire folk in Liverpool - the place was a bit of a magnet, for both onward travel and local employment and the place developed.  I understand that Liverpool was the second biggest city in England for a time.
