I'm researching the family tree of IAN KEVIN CURTIS the famous singer of the band JOY DIVISION.
I have built up quite a bit on his family tree.
I believe his ancestors where Irish on both sides of his family.
Searching for the first name of his great grandfather Curtis.
IAN KEVIN CURTIS was born 1956-1980.

Hi
You haven't given very much info as to what research you have already done. What is your connection to the family?
I believe his ancestors where Irish on both sides of his family.
How have you reached that conclusion and what documentation etc do you have to support it?
There is a lot of info here
http://www.joydiv.org/iancurtis.htm
His father was b 1925 - parents Joseph Curtis and Ellen McGee married 1914 so have you checked them out on the 1911 and earlier censuses?

I used books about IAN CURTIS and JOY DIVISION.
They mention that IAN'S great grandfather Curtis was Irish and another great grandfather was Irish.
I'm stuck on his great grandparents back.
Big fan of IAN CURTIS, his writing and JOY DIVISION.
I set up a research group about him.
The Irish connection might be why he was such a good writer and singer?
I'd like to make a short documentary or write a piece about him.

I'm doing his family tree and I've also constructed a timeline for him.

There is a lot of info available online via www.freebmd.org.uk and also using the various census info available on subscription sites and also on https://familysearch.org/search and www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
You need to work your way back via census info and purchase any necessary marriage/birth certs to advance your research
The Irish 1901/1911 is free to search here http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

The North West of England has quite a good track record when it comes to music: The Beatles, The Smiths, George Formby... ;D

His lyrics are quite poetic.
I was wondering if any of his Irish ancestors were poets, writers, artists or singers.

Thanks for your help CaroleW.
IAN CURTIS also had a sister called Carole.

They mention that IAN'S great grandfather Curtis was Irish and another great grandfather was Irish.
Have you contacted the writers to establish what they based that on? Do they have any documentary proof re: christian names/birth county of those ancestors?
The 1914 marriage of Ian's grandparents Joseph Curtis & Ellen McGee can be found on both Lancs bmd and freebmd but you will have to buy a copy of the certificate to establish their ages and their respective fathers names
If you check the 1911 census - there are several Joseph Curtis/Ellen McGee entries in Lancashire

Portarlington, Laois, Ireland was where the Curtis grandfather of IAN CURTIS was born.
-
His other lines appear to be English and Welsh (most people have 8 "grt grandparents"). Thats if it's his tree you are following. As another poster has said, there seems to be a few possibilities.

Mainly his Curtis ancestors I've been researching.
Haven't gone too much into others so far.

Think it says this on the census, however my grandfather Harold Victor Curtis (brother of Ian’s dad) always said his family were from ‘Kings County’ which is now Offaly (‘Queens County is Laois) so I believe they were from the Offaly side of Portarlington.
