Title: Downton mystery....
Post by: mshergold on Tuesday 08 September 15 10:18 BST (UK)
Although there is sufficient evidence of the following family for a brief period, some things remain a mystery....
Heres what I have>

Benjamin Shergold [sometimes spelt Shergell] married Elizabeth Munday [ sometimes spelt Mundy]
on the 16th of November 1828 at Downton. The couple had issue of Charles born 28th April 1832 and baptised on 10th May 1832 being about 2 weeks old ; George christened 3rd of March 1830 about 3 months old and James Thomas christened 3.7.1834. Depending on which sources one uses these children appear at St Edmunds Church St Wesleyan Salisbury or Salisbury Methodist.
The 1841 census shows the family as such>

Benjamin Shugarts   53 ag lab
Elizabeth Shugarts   46
Sarah Shugarts   16
William Shugarts   13
George Shugarts   11
Charles Shugarts   9
James Shugarts   7
jacob Down 80 pauper y

The census shows the family with Jacob Down being related in one form or another to Benjamin., and upon reading the image is actually Shergold.

From inspection the family escaped from the mass exodus to Canada aboard the King William but I am finding it difficult to see any of the family from 1841 onwards.
So if someone with some time would find the family in 1851 etc....... it would be appreciated.
I am also interested in any structuring that gives passage for the Mundy / Munday family as it seems there are a few Shergolds marrying into the surname.
Thank you

Findmypast has a George Shergold age 22 born Downton on the 1851 census. Living in the household of his father in law Charles Fulford. He married Charlotte Fulford in 1850.
British newspaper Archive have a report of a young man called James Shergold being given 1 months hard labour in 1850 for stealing a sheep skin in Downton.

cheers rosie and isobel..........    agreed with all excepting the Fulford marriage but in the big picture that goes onto another branch.

Unfortunately I cannot find a complete pr transcript of the village and the 17 year Mary Shergold mentioned on the "King William" is also a mystery along with the marryin structures for all the Shergold marriages. Burials for the village seem to be also hidden, which I noticed not only for the Raleigh family but my work.

I wouldnt be surprised a Shergold was caught stealing , especially in Downton, as since in the 1830s [Dirty 30s] the village suffered immensely with cholera, plagues, failed crops and the like.
Funnily enough , I am researching another crime in Downton at the moment as well which was "breaking his Mill Bank", the latter being owned by a descendant of Sir Walter Raleigh where in 1694 a John Shergold was mentioned, but our "Dirty 30s" machine breakers came from Great Wishford and Stapleford.

the subsequent list of Downton Shergolds are distantly related to the post target but have taken them on board just in case they missing from RS database.

thanks for replies

Hi,

It's possible that your Mary Ann Shergold who emigrated to Canada may have been the daughter of William and Martha Shergold.  She was baptised in Downton on 13 Feb 1820.

I have the pre-1837 transcripts for Downton but Shergold isn't that prominent a family there.  Most in the district seem to come from Wilton and Great Wishford.  Is your Benjamin Shergold possibly the one baptised in Great Wishford on 05 Jun 1786 to Rolland/Rollance Shergold and his wife Sarah?  Said Rolland married Sarah Goal of South Newton in Great Wishford on 27 Apr 1786.  They also had a daughter Sarah baptised in Great Wishford on 25 Nov 1787.

One more thing, the 1841 census for Benjamin and his family seems to have a lady called Sarah Bown or Brown living in part of their home, not Jacob Shergold,I think.  There is a family living next door also called Bown so she may be an elderly relative of their's.

Regards,

Linda

Hi, my name is Dawn Shergold. I am a direct descendant from Henry Shergold 1720 who married Elizabeth Butt. Henry was my 6x great grandfather. His son John I found in portsea which I think was the beginning of my family starting there. I have the direct tree back from Henry from Downton to present day.
