Title: Goodey Family of Reading
Post by: Magicdave2015 on Monday 07 September 15 20:54 BST (UK)
Hi,

I'm currently researching the Goodey Family of Reading, Berkshire and would love to get in touch with anyone looking at the same surname. I've managed to get quite a lot of information over the years but still have a few blank spaces which need to be filled in.

Hi David

Welcome to rootschat  :)

It may be better if you post what you are looking for regarding your blank spaces. There may be someone who can help.

If you haven't already done so, a good way to make surname connections with other members is to enter your surname interests in the Surname Interests Table (SIT), and to check there whether others are researching these names.

This can be found at http://surname.rootschat.com/ , there is a link to it under "Your Tools" at the bottom of each Rootschat page.

The more people who enter their surnames, the more chance there will be of making a connection!

I have wondered if there was a connection between the Goodey family of Reading and the Goudy's from Suffolk who moved to Reading.

Hello

I am researching Frederick Goudy born 1848 in Suffolk to Elijah. He was married firstly to Louisa and also then to Anna Maria Soffia but I think he may be a bigamist as he appears to have another family with Bathsheba Snasdell who he married in 1882 in Westminster. She moves to Reading St Giles with their children in 1891 and he moves to Poplar London and then moves to Maidenhead. Does anyone else have this theory or am I barking up the wrong tree?  Bathsheba then moves eventually to Coventry with her daughter Alice who married Eli Pendell. My granddaughter descends from Alice who is her 3 x great grandmother. Thanks
Elise

Hi Elise, Frederick was my gtgtgrandfather.
He was "married" to Laurena Fisher and had two children. I cannot find a marriage. She died in 1879
He then married Anna Maria Soffe in 1880.
I must say that I have never considered looking for another marriage for him, bigamous or not.
It wouldn't surprise me, must have a look.

I see that the 1882 marriage to Bathsheba is a Frederick Bryer Goudy. You don't happen to have the marriage certificate by any chance?

Hi thanks for replying.

I might be totally wrong but I have a hunch that he had two families on the go. Not counting the first marriage that you can't find. His son Frederick mentions his father as Frederick Goady on his Military Record the son was a bit of a character, was in the paper for stealing five pounds to run away to sea he did go to sea as he is in Cornwall in 1901.. he joined the army Royal Irish Regiment in 1902 and deserted the same year then rejoined and was discharged 1904 medically unfit. He then turns up twice in the workhouse. He had also previously been at a reform school. His name on the details of the first marriage was Frederick Bryer Goudy . He is not living with Bathsheba in any census but had three maybe more children by her, Frederick Arthur G and Alice.  I found the above info about Fred junior from Army Records on FindMyPast and Newspapers also on FindMyPast.
Best wishes Elise

Hi again

It was Fred Senior who married in 1882 who had Bryer as his middle name Fred junior was born in 1883 Arthur in 1884 and Alice in 1886.

No I think I might have to get it at some point. I am doing this for my friend who is the other Nana to my granddaughter and am not sure she will want to pay out for it as its not her main line although still in her direct line. Alice was my friends Great Grandmother so she's my gd's 3 x ggm I think!

Looks like I will have to unearth all the bits of research I have and then look for some more.

Interestingly there is a Percy Bryer Goudy, aged 31, born Slough and living in Swindon in 1911

Have not come across him!

If there is another Frederick Goudy I do not know where he could be.. but what makes me think it is the same one is the fact that Bathshebas second son was called Arthur G Goudy and I know your Frederick had a little brother called Arthur G Goudy who died aged 7.  Also the fact that Bathsheba started off in Norfolk then moved to London then moved to Reading where Frederick was and as soon as Bathsheba moved to Reading Frederick moves to London and then to Maidenhead and Bathsheba stays in Reading until she moves with her daughter and  daughters husband to Coventry.  I think Frederick had family in the Swindon area and then in the 1960's when my friends Grandparents first moved south they settled in Wiltshire and their children ended up in Dorset.  That could have just been a coincidence though.

One of Frederick and Laurena's daughters married and lived in Swindon. She was my great grandmother.

Its all very interesting.  I wonder if he was a bigamist if he would have told the truth on the marriage certificate?  So getting  it might not prove it one way or the other and will cost £9 !

That is a problem. If it is not him then it may lead to finding who and from where he came but if it is him and he lies, then it could lead to a wildgoose chase. Only if it leads to another lineage will we know the difference.
Or, he could tell the truth!

I think that it would be an idea to start a seperate thread to look for help and ideas.
I have done so,  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=740704.new#new
