I am new to research in Scotland and it has been quite a few years since I have done any family history research. My great great grandfather James Neil was born 27 Jan 1856 in Moffat, Dumfries, father Samuel Neil and mother Christina Gibson. I have not been able to find Samuel Neil in the 1841 census to try and identify his parents. I have him in the 1851,1861 & 1871 census with his wife Christina. I have his marriage to Christina Gibson on 19 Mar 1848, Bonhill Parish, Glasgow but the parish register doesn't show any parents names. I have found a possibility of a birth on 30 Aug 1829 to David Neil and Catherine Sands, Barony, Lanark.
My question is how can I find more evidence that these are his parents? Can anyone help me with any other suggestions? I would really like to extend my family tree.

His death certificate will give details of both parents, including his mother's maiden name. You will be able to download it at a modest cost from the ScotlandsPeople site. There are lots of posts here explaining how to do that.

Hi Lea-Anne ,
Samuel and Christina would appear to be in Midlothian on the 1881 and 1891 Census.
Scotlandspeople has a death for a Christina Neil(other surname Gibson) 1901 , Midlothian , born c1830 , that may help locate a death for Samuel :-\

If this is the same family that ev has found in the 1901 census Samuel Neil still alive at 75,Warrender Park Road Edinburgh with his daughter Margaret ..
1 match on S P for a death in all Records 1901/1910
A record of a will for Samuel Neil of 75,Warrender Park Road Edinburgh died 28/8/1901 At Sultom County of Shetland ....So as the other's suggested his death will get you his parents

Thanks everyone for your help. I have been lucky enough today to find Samuel Neil in Wikipedia and then his death registration as suggested. His parents were James Neil (Niel) and Sarah Lindsay. But I have not been able to find Samuel's birth details in August 1825, Edinburgh, as mentioned in the Wikipedia article and the 1841 census still stumps me. I have tried Scotchlands People, Ancestry, Family Search & Find My Past. Can anyone else help with some suggestions, your help so far has been appreciated.

There is a marriage of a James Niel to Sarah Lindsay at Barony on 6 Aug 1820.
P.S. rosie 17, you mentioned a 15 year old Sam Neil, a Tailor, on the 1841 census.
He was at a "House of Refuge for Boys" along with a lot of other boys. I am wondering if this might actually be him.

Thanks again everyone for your help. Wikipedia in known for its inaccurate information, so he may of not been born in Edinburgh and is the birth date correct. That is why I was hoping to find a church record for him to confirm his parents and date of birth. There also doesn't seem to be a record for his brothers as well. His father died when he was about 7, so this may of had an influence on his life and he may of been in the "House of Refuge for Boys" at that time. But it does seem that he got his life back on track as all the census I can find has his occupation as some form of Teacher/Lecturer.
