Dear all, is anyone researching their Irish Kennedy ancestors living in Leeds? I have an Edward Kennedy (b.1835) from Tipperary who is living in Leeds by 1856 when he gets married to Mary Parkinson. His wife's mother married a Patrick Kennedy (b.1831), also from Ireland, and I'm trying to work out whether Edward and Patrick were related in some way.
I know Edward's father was called Brian Kennedy and that Edward and Patrick knew each other, but can't tell where Patrick came from.
A bit of a long shot I know, but if anyone has come across any info about Patrick that they could share then it would help. He married his wife Ann Parkinson in 1851.

The 1851 marriage cert will show Patrick's fathers name. If it's Brian - they were brothers

Hi there, Wallace Percy Kennedy isn't in the tree I researched, but it does look like there was someone of that name from Leeds who married and settled in Hampshire, if that helps, and that he might have been known as Frank. Is there something in particular you are wanting to discover?

Hi, Thanks for your reply, my problem is finding more details on Wallace Percy (Frank) Kennedy, his sister Marie G Kennedy and their parents.
Wallace (Frank) was born around 1879 in Leeds, Marie was born around 1881 in Leeds, I can find no details for them in the 1881 census or their mother Etty Kennedy. In the 1891 census they are listed with their mother who is now a Sutcliffe and living in Leeds.
Wallace (Frank) did marry in 1904 and move to Christchurch Hampshire (now Dorset). No further details of Marie G found.
My research has stopped at Etty Kennedy and her husband, or father of both children.
Thanks for your interest

Malm55,
Just to say that you do have them in 1881 - reply #8 from Dundee in your other thread. :)

Hi, I've done a bit of looking at records. Whilst I don't have a definitive answer for you, there are a few things worth thinking about.
Firstly, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Wallace Percy turned out to be born in Ireland and his parents put down Leeds on the census, I've seen that done before. On the other hand, if he was born in Leeds and the family was Catholic, it's probably not unheard of that they might not have completed the civil birth registration. I haven't managed to track one down.
But I wondered if you'd considered that 'Etty and Frank' might be short for Elizabeth and Francis. There are an Elizabeth and Francis Kennedy named together in the Quarter Sessions in Leeds in 1879. I haven't managed to make sense of the entry, but if they had committed a crime and were institutionalised, it might explain why they are hard to find on an 1881 census together in Leeds. I haven't yet been able to find an obvious death for a Frank or Francis either, in the Catholic cemetery or elsewhere. If it were possible that might be helpful. And of course Etty might have called her son Frank in tribute to his father, explaining the name change.
My experience of researching Irish families in Leeds is that it is often difficult to find online records despite the generally good coverage in that era. If I think of anything else I will let you know.

Hi zenobia37
Thanks for your thoughts, I’m convinced that Wallace Percy (Frank) was born in Leeds, in 1991/01/11 censuses that is recorded. As you say maybe as a Catholic family they didn’t register the children’s births.
I don’t think Etty was an Elizabeth as her death records on find a grave is as follows
Etty Kennedy Sutcliffe Birth 1855, Death 22 May 1928 Killingbeck Roman Catholic Cemetery, Leeds.
Appreciate your input, I have found somewhere that Etty was born in Swineford, Mayo, Ireland.
Thanks

This seems to be the family in 1881 - referred to in the other thread. Although it says Spotland, I think it is more Bacup than Rochdale.
1881 4122 /15/23
Height Barn, Spotland
Harriett Kenedy widow 30 yrs Laundress b Ireland
Walace Kenedy 2 yrs -do-
Mary Kenedy 9 months -do-

Are Catholic baptisms available for Leeds?
