Are you sure about the spelling, and date?

Can't see anything on the 1901 and 1911 Ireland census? www.census.nationalarchives.ie

Neither can I find a birth in the Ireland Civil Records? www.irishgenealogy.ie

On what records do have James?

looking for records for my partners great grandfather born about 1886 northern ireland

do you know where in Northern Ireland he was born ?...most people from Ireland who came to England arrived at Liverpool - I live in Liverpool and can tell you that certain Northern Ireland dialect is very hard to understand - so- if he came to England and spoke to census man - his surname could be mistranscribed
Dunnen
Dunning
Dennen
Denning
Durning
Durnan
Dornan
all these surnames here in Liverpool as I post
there is a chap - from Clan , Near Radstock ,County Down - born 1882 / 3 in the 1911 census and he is in Somerset -
we are not allowed to post 1911 census returns - but I can say this man is James Denning
so
can you ask family members if Radstock ,County Down could be the area your James Dunnen was born ??
ADDED
There is a James Dornan born Belfast who is in China - overseas Military - born 1887 / 1888
I have to say that the names I am posting are probably 2 of a possible dozen or so with slightly different spellings -

What other details do you have? did James 'Dunnen' die in Northern Ireland or elsewhere? There are lots of possible surname variations if the spelling you have is not correct- Dinning is the first one that comes to mind.
From the approx. age you have given (well before the formation of Northern Ireland) it's possible he could have served in WWI but without an accurate name it will be difficult to get any information.
