Title: Ross New Hampshire
Post by: nic42 on Wednesday 02 September 15 18:12 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace a cousin (or his family) of my great great grandfather. The cousin was WG Ross and lived at 197 Walnut Street, Manchester, New Hampshire in the early 1930s. My gt gt grandfather was Kenneth Ross and lived in Pugwash Nova Scotia.
Regards Nic

Hi Sandra,
I know little of WG Ross other than his address, as he wrote to the UK War Office for information on Kenneth's son Alexander McKenzie Ross. I would assume he would have been born around 1880 in Nova Scotia, but I am not sure. Kenneth Ross was born in about 1825 probably Nova Scotia and was a blacksmith. Alexander was my great grandfather and left Canada under a cloud and is well documented, but his father Kenneth died young and left little trace. I am hoping the cousin may provide a track back to Kenneth.

Do you have this marriage ?

Kenneth Ross , blacksmith , 38 , residence Gairloch NS, parents Alexander & Elizabeth
Catherine Mackenzie , 35,                  "           "          , parents Hector & Nancy

married 17 May 1873 at Gairloch.

This makes Kenneth Ross born about 1835.

This record can be viewed here :https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/

Thanks CB
I am sure that this is a different Kenneth Ross as mine married Jane McKenzie who then remarried as a widow. In the 1861 Canadian census she is recorded as living with Kenneth in Hillsborough New Brunswick, and in 1871 she had remarried. Mind it's quite a coincidence that you find a Kenneth with the same job and married to a McKenzie, I wonder if it's the same family or that there are a lot of Rosses in this part of Canada

My apologies. I was a little confused by your reference to 1880. I see from the 1861 census that Alexander was born in 1854 so this marriage is obviously wrong.

From the Manchester Directory 1934 :

William G Ross 197 Walnut Street, electrician , spouse Rose E Ross

1930 US census ( transcribed William T Ross ) :

Looking at the image on A*y William on the census is an electrician at the right address.

I think this is their marriage :

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVBK-CB8P

There is a border crossing from US to Canada 11 Sep 1935 , arriving St Stephen , New Brunswick

Rose E Ross mother
Ian Maclaughlan Ross 10
Phyllis Joan Ross 7
David Alexander Ross 5
Richard Ross

Ithink it says accompanying husband , but I can't spot him on the list.

By the way , I read the letter in the Service Record - how interesting !

I think this is the family in 1901 , after the death of Duncan :

Marriage for Duncan Ross & Joanna MacKay :

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F229-4HH

His parents given as David & Joanna.

Possible 1871 census  in Pugwash:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4DD-QH8  - for some reason familysearch has missed Duncan off this transcript , but he is present on the record.

This obviously needs checking , but the Pugwash connection is interesting.

Hi Christine,
You have been absolutely brilliant. I have looked up Duncan McLanders Ross and his father appears to be David 1824 1901 married to Joanne McLanders 1824 1898. I have found a family tree that gives David brother as being Kenneth Ross 1830. I need to check the details but if right you have helped me track Kenneth Ross' family. Thanks for the help

Excellent Christine  ;D

There was no official state-wide registration of births in Nova Scotia in 1895 but William's Mother made a declaration confirming his birth -

Canadian WW1 attestation papers for William George Ross born 13 April 1895 -

These military files are in the process of being digitalised, they are up to the letter D=Devos so it will take time to get to "R=Ross" - worth you checking back though - there is a lot of information in these Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) service files and they cost nothing.

Hi Sandra and Christine,
Thanks for your help. I have had a look as far as I can for the connection between William George Ross 1895 and Kenneth Ross c1825 Nova Scotia and using family trees, taken with a pinch of salt, go back David Ross 1842, married to Joanne McLanders. He appears to have had a brother Kenneth Ross 1830 which would fit my Kenneth. Do any of the Canadian records support this? Mind the Canadian Rosses are beginning to go around and around in my head. Whilst looking at Kenneth I noticed his wife Jane McKenzie has a mother Annabelle Ross c1795 probably Isle of Lewis Scotland which is where David Ross 1842 parents Alexander Ross and Isabella came from. Incestuous or are there lots of Rosses with the same name?
