Hi Everyone,
I am trying to find out information about my great-uncle Herbert George Thomas, possibly known as Bert, who I can find no record of after 1947.
He was born in Cardiff on the 27th April 1896 and my last record of him is as the informant to his mother's death in June 1947. He is living with his mother at the family home in 11 Acfold Road, Fulham SW6. And he was a Civil Servant.
Family members believe that he was unmarried and probably homosexual but sadly he was not really talked about. Both his sisters' families moved to the Glastonbury area of Somerset so he may have moved there too or possibly have moved in with a man but this is all speculation!
I have looked at passenger records in case he traveled abroad and also marriage indexes if he did end up marrying but I have found no-one that fits. I have purchased a couple of deaths certificates that I thought could possibly be him but I have since disproved. Now I am out of ideas!
Any thoughts?
I know this is a vague post - sorry
Patrick

;D I see the voyage was after the death
His address in the UK was 5, Carlton Road, Gosport, Hampshire though !

The England & Wales death index after 1969 shows the reported date of birth.
-
In the electoral roll of 1948,there is a Herbert G Thomas at 16 Acfold Road,Fulham which may well be him.
-
Are you sure of his date of birth?
It would appear that Herbert George Thomas born Cardiff June 1896 died Cardiff March 1897
-
Hi would be wary of the Civil Servant Herbert as their is a Herbert H Thomas married to an Annie M born 23rd February 1895 also a Civil Servant travelling to Bermuda a few years after 1947 abode in UK 31, Highgrove Way, Ruislip?

Carol, Yes that could easily be him on the electoral roll at number 16 Acfold Road. I know that they lived at number 19 Acfold Road before moving c.1930 to number 11.
Dawn, I have his birth certificate which says he was born on 27th April 1896 at 36 Woodville Road, St John Cardiff son of William George Thomas and Elizabeth Thomas (Christmas)
He is in the 1901 census at 14 Bovingdon Road in Fulham and the 1911 census at 9A Wandsworth Bridge Road, Fulham.
He is the informant on his father's death certificate in 1936 and his mother's in 1947 aswell as the executor of her will. I have looked but not seen a will for him.
The 1948 Electoral roll pushes my knowledge of his whereabouts one year on!! :D
Thank you all for your help

He has possibly moved to 111 Hurlingham Road in Fulham by 1950 as there is a Herbert G Thomas on the electoral roll there.
Also there in 1951, 1952 and 1953 but not 1954
Makes me think he could be the death that i discounted in 1953!!

Do you know where his parents are buried?
Is he with them?
-
I found out that they were buried in North Sheen Cemetery but I don't know if there is a memorial to them or whether Herbert is there aswell
-
As you have dates of death for his parents, it might be a relatively easy look-up for the cemetery staff to do to see if he is with them
http://www.lbhf.gov.uk/directory/community_and_living/birth_marriage_and_death/burial_and_cremation/10968_cemeteries_and_burials.asp?LGNTF=32
Also ask at the same time if there is a headstone.
-
Thank you that is a great idea. Would I not need to know his date of death to find his burial though?

If you have the dates of his parents deaths,it would not take the staff very long too see if anyone else is buried with them.

He is not buried with his parents at North Sheen...out of ideas again!!

I have a possible death certificate for a great-uncle but I don’t feel confident enough that it is the right man. What do you think…could it be him? What I know for fact is below… (the red is speculation)
1896 – Herbert George Thomas Birth 27th April 1896, 36 Woodville Road, Cardiff,
1901 – 14 Bovingdon Road, Fulham, Herbert G Thomas, Son, 4, Glamorgan Cardiff
1911 – 9A Wandsworth Bridge Road, Fulham, Herbert Thomas, Son, 15, Single, Errand Boy, Retail Tea Merchant, Worker, Cardiff, Glamorgan
1921 – 16 Crondace Road, Hurlingham Ward (electoral register)
1923 to 1947 – 11 Acfold Road, Fulham, Herbert George Thomas (electoral registers)
1939 – 11 Acfold Road, Herbert G Thomas, Male, 27 April 1896, Single, Confectioner & Tobacconist
1947 – 11 Acfold Road, Fulham, Herbert George Thomas, Civil Servant
1948 – 16 Acfold Road, Fulham, Herbert G Thomas
1950 to 1953 – 111 Hurlingham Road, Fulham, Herbert G Thomas
Is this the same man?? Herbert George Thomas
Death 21st January 1953 – Hundred Acres Banstead
Age: 57
Occupation: a Guide Book Seller
Cause of death: 1(a) Broncho pneumonia II General Paralysis of the Insane PM Certified by R Macdonald MB
Informant: W G Brown Causing the body to be buried Hundred Acres Banstead
Technically he would have been 56 but I will let that one go! But there is nothing else to link with any information I have. i.e. residence and occupation. I know that the “Paralysis of the Insane” may have come about quickly but there has been no mention of an illness or incapacity for him.
I’m really not sure tbh. It’s definitely a possibility. No other death registered “fits” age and name wise like this one does. And also I can’t find someone else who would definitely fit this guy either which is promising.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to where I could look next. Maybe the burial would give next of kin. (he did have a sister and niece and nephews alive)

Hi Patrick
Burials in and around London are notoriously difficult to find, there are so many municipal cemeteries and very few records online.
Because he died 'recently' the admission & discharge records deposted at the London Metropolitan Archives might be closed under the 100 years rule but maybe worth a try as you have his death cert
