William Thompson [whose father named the same with an occupation of weaver], aged 54 being a widower of Portsmouth married 29th of November in 1881. His wife was Ann Shergold nee Gray also a widow was the daughter of Charles Gray a glovercutter.
[ referred to as page 240 no 479] with witnesses John & Annette Maria.......
Heres the problem.....
1. I cant find the certificate reference number.
2. I cant find the Gray to Shergold marriage
3. I cant find any census or DOB or DODs for anyone in the whole group.
Please enlighten me to some information to unravel the mystery........ my thought was maybe Ann was born Gray then married, then remarried to a Shergold then married again to Thompson???
But to be honest I wouldnt have a clue....
Thanks.

Okay, this is a bit strange, given that so far everything else seems to fit the information you have previously provided. It shows that Ann was MEAD not GRAY?? I will see if I can sort out what's going on with her...
Until then, it appears that this is them again

Most likely that is Ann's first husband. Given that her children were so young, no doubt she was in need of a wage earner and father for them, hence the quick re-marriage.

"It shows that Ann was MEAD not GRAY??"
yes I agree Karenlee and I suspect the source of the material had crossed over their information which in turn got transferred to my book.......
good to have a second pair of eyes look at these things......
I think now, that I will put this as completed as I have looked at this branch before and shall accordingly get in contact with the mistranscribed page owner........ thanks everyone... :)

crossed over from where? I think you can only say that for certain if you look at the original record.
and shall accordingly get in contact with the mistranscribed page owner........
Again unless you look at the original, how can you say that a mistranscription has occurred. Gray and Mead don't look alike at all. I don't see how his name has been recorded unless someone gave that to the incumbent in 1881?
There are no relationships shown on 1841 census and I can't find Ann on 1851 census at the moment to see who she was living with. Have you considered the possibility that perhaps she looked on Charles Gray as her father and this is why she gave his name :-\ Just a possibility to consider before you contact the transcription hosts.

Little Nell..... the quotation considerations of my comments are feasible if one is coming in blind.., however, once I saw the suggestion of Ann Mead and her life presented it was then understood that I knew what this was about. A distant cousin whose tree appears on the free pages of anc had covered Ann and Georges life..... I referred to another set of notes about this and saw there was an error upon the behalf of a fourth party............. but thanks for the input.

Sorry! I disagree! ;D
It simply shows that her mother had possibly remarried and was now Mead?
Or that Sarah Mead was his mother-in-law from his previous marriage?
There is nothing on that census that definitely links Ann to Sarah?
Of course, you may be right, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions! ;D
