Title: Anthony Hamill from Maryport, Cumberland, England to Canada after WW1?
Post by: Lost Rackley on Friday 28 August 15 16:54 BST (UK)
Looking for info on my great grandmother's missing brother.
His name was Anthony Hamill and he was seen leaving Liverpool Docks on a ship for Canada in about 1921.
He served and survived WW1 but the loss of his brother John and the war affected him and he couldn't settle in his hometown.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
My family always wondered what happened to him.
Thank you.

What was the year of birth please ?

Parents names could also be helpful in identifying him.

This one seems to be coming up on ancestry as Arthur Hammill aged 23 years, heading to San Francisco. Father S Hammill 3 Crucible Place, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Anthony Hamill born about 1890.
His parents were James Hamill born 1840 and Mary or Elizabeth Hamill.
James Hamill married twice and confusingly named two of his sons Anthony Hamill.

Yes I think that's him.
It's very confusing because two lots of Irish Hamill's intermarried and had the same names in both families.
They also both had lodging houses in the same street in my hometown.
Untangling them is a nightmare.
My Hamill's were catholics.

Charlotte Hamill married William Fisher.
Not sure what year they married but my grandfather, their first son was born in 1915 John Fisher.
Charlotte (Hamill) Fisher died in 1948.

So two half brothers who had the same father James Hamill who he named Anthony went missing at sea.
No idea which boat or ship the 1893 Anthony Hamill drowned on or where.

Sounds right.
Anthony Hamill's regiment number was 74777.
He was a driver (Worked with horses) during WW1.
Charlotte Hamill was born 1894.
A relative just confirmed this date.
Don't worry about the Winifred middle name.

The British Army Service Record for Anthony Hamill shows his address as 15 Nelson Street Maryport, same as the last UK census. Marine Store Dealer. It also confirms that he was tattooed - anchor and star right arm - true love and dagger left arm. Regiment No 74777 - Royal Field Artillery.

Can't see any passenger list to Canada or the USA showing Anthony Hamill born 1897.  Have tried variations of the Hamill/Hammill/Hamel/Hamel surname but so far nothing.
Unfortunately there are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs.  Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further.  Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging.  The latest available Canadian Census is 1921   As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 85 years ago (up to about 1930 at present) and deaths 70 years ago. Sometimes by using newspaper announcements, cemetery records, obituaries, telephone directories we can manage to find information but you can see how difficult it can be.

Regards
Sandra

As you can see Anthony Hamill was still in his hometown of Maryport, Cumberland, England in 1921.

Thanks for all that Sandra.
15 Nelson Street is correct but his last address was in Crosby Street, Maryport.
His father James Hamill was a marine store dealer at 3 John Street, Maryport.
Anthony worked for him.
I found a mention in a Maryport book that said that my great grandmother was granted a marine store licence in 1924.

We find it all a bit strange.
WHO witnessed him getting onto a ship for Canada at the Liverpool Docks?
Sounds to me like he was traumatised after WW1 and the death of his older brother John.
Wouldn't he have drawn his army pension if he had survived into old age?
Maybe he never left England?

Hi,

Just to confuse things.... there is an obit in the Winnipeg Free Press, July 24 1968 for an Archie Hamill from Maryport England.  He died on the 22nd. He came to Canada in 1912.   He was 77.  His wife was Ann.  No mention of kids or other relatives.

I only mention this because if he is related, he might be a contact in this country that your relative might have come out to???

Wonder if Anthony went north of the border ?

Tried checking deaths for Anthony Hamill in Scotland up to 1970 but there was no record of anyone who might fit. Neither was there a marriage which could be attributed to him.

Trying to investigate Archie - Couldn't find an Archibald Hamill born 1891 Maryport Cumberland or a passenger list for anyone of that name.

There was an Archibald/Archie who seemed to be connected to Thomas Hamill who died in 1950.  Both appear to have lived at Lewis Street throughout Canada Voters Lists and are listed on FIND A GRAVE Archie on the voters lists did have a wife Ann, however Archie was born Ontario.

Maybe he emigrated to another country?
America?
Australia?

Oops :P :P

Looks like I misread Archie Hamill's death.  The print is so small... the lady beside him came from Maryport - a Mrs Ethel Hazelridge McClyment.

Sorry about that.  Total red herring!!!!!

Just searched for Hamill and Maryport and that is the only thing that popped up in the Canadian newspapers on FindMyPast.  Please ignore!!

Will try Toronto Star and Globe and Mail.

Poor fellow does seem to have vanished.  He looks so young in his photo!

RK --- sorry again for the error :'(

He doesn't seem to show up on passenger lists to the USA or Australia - wondered if he had a middle name and started using that but couldn't see anything under James either, which was his father's name.

Who says he went to Canada ?

Hi,

Not seeing an Anthony or Tony Hamill in the Toronto papers either.  :'(

I think Sandra is right about the middle name.  Also, is there any possibility he might have changed his name altogether.... maybe using a mother's maiden name or some such thing?   He certainly isn't leaving us any clues!!

If he really wanted to disappear, it looks like he succeeded!

Your idea of following the pension is a good one.  Not sure how to do that, but it might provide some sort of lead.

My family were told he was last seen leaving on a ship to Canada.
No idea who witnessed this.
Wonder if my family reported him missing at the time?
Until the 1921 census comes out I don't even know who he was living with at Crosby Street, Maryport.
My late grandfather might have known more details but he died in 1987.
Maybe he moved away and changed his name?
Would he need a passport to go abroad back then?

You could try electoral registers for 29 Crosby Street Maryport in 1921 to see who was living there.

Something to check out - There was a marriage in Skipton Yorkshire of Anthony Hamill to Rose Bryden - June 1921 - 9a 98
A birth the following year for a James Hamill - Registered March 1922 - Skipton 9a 42
This James was born 9 December 1921 and passed away January 1993 -

Rose Ann Hamill and Anthony lived at 6 Bessie Street Skipton in 1922.

Because Anthony's father was called James.
Be nice if it is our Anthony Hamill.

You were correct SANDRA!
Bumped into my great aunty today and she told me Anthony married a Rose and lived in Yorkshire.
They had five children but he left them and departed from Southampton Docks on a ship for America in the 1930's?
She said it was sunk, so I'm guessing it was during WW2?
